l of which the following` is a specification,
`Uopes of this patent may be obtained for reference beinghad therein to the accom- Plllylng (tirar-finge.
The invention relates to the.manufacture` of hats and more particularly to that type in which a blank of felt,` Straw or other Isuitable material is faf-:hioned into various shapes. It the object of the invention to facilitate the manufacture, and further to obtain a construction thatis readily fashionable. "llo this end the invention coinprisee the novel method and construction as hereiiiaftcr ect forth.
ln the drawings:
Figure l a perspective view of a'hat embodying my invention;
Fig@ illnetratee the procese;
Fig. 3 ie an enlarged cross sect-ion through the rim;
`lig. el. an ele Yation thereof;
`Fig. is a section showing the manner of securing the ends of the, reinforcing Wire; and
Vl"ig. l ie a cross section thereof.
.il is the blank from which the hat is formed and which is of any suitable ina.- tcrial.` auch aS soft felt. B ie the riin portion, which is faehioi'ied to the desired contour and which faced with suitable material i, euch :as velvet. To simplify the proceee of manufacture and also to facilitate the tafsl'lioning and re-fashioning. of the hat, the
H method of conetruction is as follows: The
blank .il 'ie yfirst `placed on a Suitable block D, and :z portion of the rii'n to be faced is coa-ted `with water-proof adhesive material, preferably liquid rubber cement. The fac- Speccation of Letters Patent.

ing material C ie also preferably coated on its inner face with the cement. A fashionable Vreinforcing Wire E is then placed around theriln. preferably parallel with the edge thereof, but spaced a short distance therefrom. This Wire has a fabric coating F which will adhere to the cementl coated face of the rini and the facing material coyering the saine. The opposite endsrof the Wire may be secured to each otherv by a Suitable con Dlino' sleeve G after which the facing material C ie placed. over the im and pressed into contact therewith, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the steps thus,l far described, the final form of the hat is not imparted thereto, but on the contrary, the rim rnay be left in circular forni, which facilitates the attachment of the reinforcing Wire and the facing Inatcrial. As soon, however, as the cement has ect, the rim may be fashioned to any desired contour by Inerely bending the Wire. Thus the necessity of re-blocking is dispensed with and at any time the forni of hat may be easily changed.
In addition to its function of ini vai-tino' form to the hat ythe Wire F forms a bead parallel to the edge, which adds `to the appearance.
That I claiin as niy invention ie:-
n a hat, the combination With the rini portion forined of sheet material, of a fashionable reinforcing Wire placed about said rini adjacent the edge and a facing cemented to said rini covering and Seciuing said reinforcing wire, whereby the shape of the riin portion of the hat may be varied.
In testimony whereof l a .iX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
