To all whom, it may concern."
Be it known that I, EDWIN ()nnro, a: subject of the King of Italy, and residing at 108 Via Veneto, Rome, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for storing, Loading, and Discharging Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in torpedo magazines and means for launching the torpedoes.
The object of the invention is to provide a rotary magazine having a plurality of cradles capable of movement to position a torpedo adjacenta launching tube and sealing the joint between the cradles and said tube. I
A further object of the invention is to provide in the magazine compressed air tanks rotatable with the magazine, and confined thereby, there being one tank for each torpedo.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary and slidable torpedo magazine and a fixed launching tube, with means on the magazine to engage in the tube to seal the joint when launching.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, as applied to a submarine boat.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the forward part of a submarine fitted with the revolving torpedo-magazine.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the inner, watertight hull of the submarine and of the magazine throughline 22 on Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the inner hull of the submarine, with the after part of the torpedo magazine in elevation.
In Fig. l L is the torpedo launching tube, 8, s are torpedo storing tubes carried by radial arms or disks R, R, R fixed on a shaft a which revolves in bearings C, C. S designates the torpedoes carried in their tubes or cradles. M represents the mouth pieces or nozzles of the storage tubes 8, s which can be made tofit into the mouthpiece N of the launching-tube L, by moving forward the whole torpedo magazine or each torpedocarrying tube 8.
A designates the compressed air chambers used for dischargingfthe torpedoes. These chambers are inserted into holes in the arms or'disks R, suitable connections, controlled by valves, being made to the respective tubes 8.
In operation, the torpedoes are inserted in the cradles, and the compressed air tanks are positioned adjacent the cradles, as shown in the drawing.
To launch a torpedo, the magazine is rotated to bring the lower cradle in alinement with the launching tube, and then'the magazine is moved forwardly until the nozzle M, on the cradle, engages snugly in the mouth piece N, in the, tube. By this construction, an air tight joint is made between the cradle and the launching tube, with the result that the full effect of the cempressed'air is 0btained. After the torpedo is launched, the
magazine is moved away from the tube, and is rotated to bring another cradle in. position.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a rotatable and slidably mounted torpedo magazine having a plurality of cradles, torpedo discharging means mounted in the magazine, and a launching tube with which any one of the cradles is adapted to register with and engage.
2. In a torpedo magazine and launching apparatus for vessels, the combination of a rotatable and slidable magazine provided with a plurality of cradles, a stationary launching tube, and means on each cradle and the launching tube for sealing the joint between the cradle and the launching tube when the magazine is moved on the shaft.
3. An apparatus for storing and launching torpedoes in vessels comprising a shaft, a revolving magazine on the shaft and including a plurality of cradles and compressed air tanks arranged radially about the shaft and supported in the space inclosed by the cradles, whereby the compressed air tanks and the cradles are rotated simultaneously with the magazine, a launching tube, and means'for registering and sealing the joint between the respective cradles and launching tube.
4:. In an apparatus for storing and launching torpedoes in vessels, comprising a shaft, a slidable revolving magazine mounted on the shaft and including a plurality of cradles, a launching tube, means for sealing the joint between one of the cradles and the launching tube when the magazine is slid to discharging position, and compressed air tan is arranged radially about the shaft and supported in the space inclosed by the cradles.
An apparatus for storing and launchtorpedoes in vessels, comprising av launching tube, a slidablo revolving magazine including a plurality of cradles, nozzlcs on the forward end of each cradle, a mouth piece on the rear end of the launching: tube for sealing the joint between the Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cent adjacent cradle and the launching tube when the magazine is in discharging position, and compressed air tanks arranged radially about and rotating with the magazine and supported within the space inclosed by the cr dle I In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses the 22nd day of March, 1916.,
