AARON K. KLINE, OF READINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN cAR-couPLINGs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,274, dated March 5,1872.
Specication describing a new and Improved Self- Coupling Oar-Coupling invented by AARON K. KLINE, of Readin gton, inthe county of, Hunterdon and State of New Jersey.
The invention will rst be fully described, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a pair of draw-heads and aidonble-headed coupling-rod arranged according to my invention, the two heads being coupled together. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one of the heads with a coupling-bolt hanging by one end when uncoupled. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line x x of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a top view, showing the adjustment of the coupling-rod for selfcoupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the draw-heads, with wide largemouthed openings for the coupling-bolt, the sides and bottom of which converge toward the rear to the point O, behind which are the square shoulders E for holding the head F of the coupling-rod J, which drops behind them, a narrow space, G, being provided between that portion of the side wall H rising higher than the bottom wall I for the shank of the connecting-bolt to fall into. The said side walls are brought so close together in advance ofthe space G as to cause the rod-head to rise without the aid of the bottom to pass over the shoulders to the space K. In this space K the shoulders are recessed where the head draws against them, as shown at L, so that when the link is uncoupled at one 'end and let fall the other head will be arrested by the upper wall of said recess, as indicated in Fig. 3, so as to prevent the coupling-link from falling out. L is an overhanging projection on the end wall ot' the recess, under which a projection, M, on the head of the rod is engaged, when it is adjusted for coupling, as shown in Fig. 4. N represents the detachable portion of the head coniprising the shoulders E and part of the iiarin g walls. It is dropped into a vertical dovetal groove, to which it is fitted, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. A coupling-rod, with a head on one end and a link on the other, may be used for coupling a draw-head of this kind with one or the other kind.
Hav ing thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- l. The overhanging projection L', combined with the projection M of rod, as and for the purpose described.
2. The portion N of the said draw-head having the shoulders E made detachable, substantially as specified.
AARON K. KLINE.
