IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,232, dated March 5, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, HEROYE. TOWER, of Worthington, Hampshire county, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Baskets, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in combining metallic tops with the bottom .and sides of a wooden basket, in the manner hereinafter described, the object thereof being to form a shield or protector for those parts of the basket most liable to destruction, and thus greatly to increase the durability and value of the basket without affecting materially its bulk or weight.
In the accompanying drawing, makin ga part hereof, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved basket turned bottom upward; Fig. 2, an edge elevation of a detached top and Fig. 3, a plan of the last named as cut from a piece of sheet metal.
The parts marked a a represent the standards, b b the filling, c c the taps, and f the bolt or rivet connecting the taps and standards centrally. I make the standards a a and filling 1) b of any species of suitable wood prepared and woven in the ordinary manner; the taps c c I make of any species of suitable sheet metal, preferably of galvanized iron. I form the taps c c substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and arrange and incorporate them in the basket as in Fig. 1-that is, extending quite across the bottom and for a short distance up the sides thereof-where I secure the ends of such taps by tucking them between the filling and standards. And, further, I connect the several taps and standards centrally by means of a bolt or rivet, f, which prevents any displacement of such taps and, binding the whole firmly together, greatly strengthens the bottom of the basket.
What I claim as my invention is The metallic taps c c, in combination'with the standards a a, filling I) b, and central bolt f, substantially as specified.
