" orro. srAAoK,
To all w/wmz't mag concern: v I Be it known that LOTTO E. STAAoK, a Port Townsend, in the. county of Jefferson and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had'to the accompanyingdrawings. 7 i v This invention relates to certain improvean object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character adapted toibe employed in connection with a controlling lever provided with a latch mechanism including a release lever fulcrumed to the controlling lever and which serves to hold the release lever against movement to prevent unauthorized operation of the controlling lever.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lock wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the I better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein V Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the upper portion of the controlling lever illustrating a lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position;
ig. 2 is a vsectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings C denotes a controlling lever ofa type employed in connection with the emergency brake on a Ford automobile and R denotes a release lever fulcrumed on the controlling lever O and which serves to release the well known type of latch. As the lower end ortion of the controlling lever C and the latch form no part of my present invention and are well known a disclosure thereof is not believed necessary.
My improved lock comprises a body or block 1 adapted to be positioned between the -v -l tfi ationof Letters Patent. if

Oneedge ofythe 'block l is grooved. handle H while the R is; effectively as at 2 to receive the opposite {edgeoflthe block 1 isrounded as indicated atifZ so as, to; snugly fit within the upperv .01) free endportionof the release lever R; ;It;;i s}found.of advantage to pro;
vide the rounded edge 2 with a wear plateS. Permanently secured to a side face of the block-orzmeniber l as at 4 is'a metallic 'plate or strap Sextending beyond the op-,
posite edges of the block or member l and hingedly connected'to one end portion of theplate orstrap 5 is a hasp 7 angular in longitudinal section and 7 bridge the handle H of the controlling lever C and overlie the face of the block or member 1 remote from the strap or plate 5.
.Hingedly engaged with the opposite end portion of the plate or strap 5 is a second hasp 8 also angular 1n longltudmal section and'which contacts with the outer face of the release lever B and is adapted to overhasp 7 when said hasp 7 is operatively engaged with the handle H. The free end or overlying portions of the hasps 7 and 8 are .provided with the registering slots 9 through which is adapted to be directed the staple member 10 carried by the block or member 1 when said hasps 7 and 8 are in locked adjustment. A padlock 11 or the like is adapted to be engaged with the staple 10, as illustrated in Fig. 1 for holding the hasps 7 and 8 against outward swinging movement. The face of the block or member 1 with which the hasps 7 and 8 co-act is provided with an open ended'recess 12 extending slightly below the plane and 8 when in closed position. The recesses 12 permits the ready insertion of a digit of the hand inwardly of said hasps 7 and 8 to facilitate the outward swinging movement thereof when it is desired to remove my improved look from applied position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a lock constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the appearance which is adapted tooccupied by said hasps 7 I and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
As a new article of manufacture, a lock comprising a body adapted to be inserted between a lever and a release lever fulcrum ed thereto, a strap secured to one face of the block and extending beyond opposite ends thereof, hasps pivotally engaged with the extended portion of the straps, each of said hasps being angular in longitudinal section so as to overlie'the face of the block remote from the strap and to overlap each other, said hasps being adapted to bridge the'lever and the release lever for Gopies of this patent may be obtainedtor. five cents eaeh, by addressing the V r Washington, D. ing portions of the hasps being holding the body snugly between the lever and the release lever to prevent inward movement of the release lever, the overlyprovided With slots, a staple member carried by the body and extending through the slots When the hasps are in overlying relation, and means for holding the hasps against out- Ward movement When in closed position, the face of the body remote from the strap be ing provided With an open ended recess pai tially intersecting the plane occupied by the hasps When in overlying relation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
