Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, ,of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,-like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to filling replenishing looms, wherein the filling carrier is automatically changed at or prior to complete exhaustion of the particularly, it has reference to such filling replenishing looms of the overpick type.
In looms of the over-pick type, the shuttle is thrown across the layby means of a picker which travels on a guide rod or spindle. This guide rod or spindle is usually positioned above the shuttle-box and the picker extends therefrom down into the path of the shuttle. The position. of the guide rod or spindle is such that it seriously interferes with the filling replenishing mechanism and its adjuncts as now commonly found on filling replenishing looms.
With these generally-stated facts in mind, the present invention contemplates the provision of means whereby the shuttle-box or shuttle of an overpick loom may be provided at desired times with a fresh supply of filling. I

It is an object cf the present invention, also, to so construct and simplify the combination and arrangement of parts as to enable overpick -looms now in use to be provided with the present invention without material. alteration in the general construe tion thereof. all of which will be best underfilling, or upon breakage thereof; and more stood from the following description and accompanying drawings of one form of -'means for carrying the present invention into practical efiect.
- While the present invention in its various features is hereinafter described in connection with an overpick loom, wherein they have special adaptation, it is to be understood that many of these features may be employed in looms of other types, Without departing from the true scope of the actual invention.

shuttlebox at the filling replenishing side of the loom is provided with a rear binder 2,1 which may be of any usual character or construction, and which is normally under the action of the binder finger 48, Fig. 8,

and in order at such times to still maintain the binder pressed firmly upon the shuttle in the box to thereby hold it rigidly for the action of the trai'isferrer, the present invention orovides means which is nor-mall inactive during the weaving operation, but which, when the shuttlebox is moved trontwerd of the lay, acts upon the binder to rigidly secure the shuttle in the shuttle-box. As one form of means to this end, the base portion 5 19 of the shuttle-box has pivoted thereto as at 530, Fig. 3, e shuttle clamp comprising an arm 5i scripted to engage the binder 21, as will hereinafter appear, and an arm which, when the shuttle-box is in normal 11o rides over the projection or shoulder 53 which thereby turns the clump upon its pivotal mounting 50 and forces its upper arm against the binder. Obviously the upper arm might not directly against the sl'iuttle, but it is preferable to have this action exerted throughthe binder, /Vhen the shuttle-box returns to its weaving posi tion with respect to the lay, the shuttle clump becomes inactive and the binder finger 4C8 assumes control of the binder 21.
A suitable source of supply for filled carriers is preferably provided in the form of u hopper or chute. In the present form of the ii'ivention, the chute comprises the base holding portion 54; end the tip holding porner, but in the present form of the inveng tion they are secured to an arm 56 mounted on the loom frame, substantiall cated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The tip holding portion 55 of the chute is provided with a slot 57 through which may project he end portions 58 of the filling leading from the filling carriers, and a suitable arm 59 connccted to the supporting arm 56 may be provided with a suitable stud 60, Figs. 3 and 5, to which the ends of the filling leading from. the carriers may be secured.
It is desirable that the filling carriers be so controlled in the hopper that they may be presented in position for the transfer one at a time, and that such position shall not interfere with the movement of the picker spindle 13 during normal weaving operation. As a convenient form of means to these ends, the hopper in the present form of the invention has at the lower end of its base holding portion, a base rest 61, Fig. 2,,
for the lower one of the column of filling carriers when it is permitted to drop, as will hereinafter more fully appear. Lilgewise, the tip holdin portion of the hopper is provided with a tip rest 62 on which the tip of the lower filling carrier in the hopper may rest when such filling carrier is permitted to drop to the lowest position. From the construction thus described as a. preferred form of the lower portion of the hop per, it will be noted that said lower portion. has a rearwardly extending opening through which a filling carrier may be forced into transferring position, as will now be described;
Mounted upon a suitable rock shaft 63, preferably secured to brackets 64, are the carrier positioning arms 65, the lower ends of which are provided with the pushers 66 for engaging and pushin the lowermost fi1ling carrier into transrerring position. The pushers on the arms 65 are preferably formed as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3 so as to provide an extended portion 67 which may contact with the body of the lowermost filling carrier between the base and tip engaging portions of the hopper.
In order to receive the filling carrier which is thus to be positioned by the positioning arms 65, the tip and base receiving portions of, the hopper are provided with spring clips 68 and 69, respectively, substantially as indicated in Fig. 6. llhe holding portions of the spring clips 68 and 69 are provided with seats 70 and 71 respectively,-so positioned with respect to the picker;. spindle 13 and shuttle-box at the filling replenishing side of the loom, that when the lay is at its front position, the filling carrier which is positioned for trans as indi- 1 eas es for, will not be struck by the picker spindle 13, but will be held above the shuttle-box when the latter is given its additional. forward movement upon call forfilling replenishment.
Extending rearwardly from the shaft 63 is the arm 72, the rear end of which has a pin 73 which engages the slot 74: at the upper end of a link 7 5 which is connected at its lower end 76 to the transferrer arm 77 mounted to rock about the axis '38, Fig. 2, in effecting the transfer of a fillin carrier to the shuttle, the construction being such that upon downward movement of the trans ferrer arm 77, the link will be pulled downward until the upper end of its slot 74 contacts with the pin 73, whereupon the arm 72 acting through the shaft 63'will turn. the positioning arms 65,into the position indicated in Fig. 3, to thereby Withdraw the positioner 66 from beneath the column of fillingcarriers and permit the lowermost carrier to take position opposite the portion 67 ot' the positioner. Projecting downward from the hub 79 of the transfer-rel arm 77 is the arm, 80, to the lower end of which is pivotally mounted at 81, the dagger 82 having a notched end portion 83 for engagement with a bunter 84- carried by the shuttle-boX carrying frame, the (ZOIlStl'UCtlOIl being such that during normal operation of the loom, the hunter 84 will not meet the dagger 83 and the loom. will continue to weave without replenishing".
W'hen replenishment is called, however, and j the shuttle-box is carried by its supporting l ranie into. the position indicated in Fig. 3, as hercinbefore described, the hunter 84- will be moved an additional distance to the front, so that on forward movement of the lay, the hunter 84; will meet the (bigger 83 and thereby cause the transfer-rel arm 77 to trarsfer a filling carrier from the spring clips (58 and and the tip of the bobbin to effect itstransfer.
It is desirable that the bobbin be directed in its downward movement to the shuttle after it leaves the holding clips 68 and 69 of the hopper; and to this end the arm 87, Fig. 2, is fixedly mounted in position and provided at its free. end with a director 88 pivoted at 89 to said arm 87 a suitable spring being provided for normally holding the director 88 in its raised or normal position, as indicated. in Fig. 2, the spring itself not being shown as it is common in this type of loom, and well understood by those skilled in the art.
It is desirable that the action of the replenishing mechanism be suspended in case the shuttle is not properly positioned in the box at the filling replenishing side of the loom; and to this end, the present invention provides a safety deyice, a practical and convenient form of which will now be described.
The safety device comprises a feeler arm 90, Figs. 2 and 3, pivotally mounted at 91 to :1 lug 92 extended downward from the hunter 82, to a point horizontally below the pivotal connection between the dagger 82 and the arm 80, Fig. 3, a suitable stop 98 being provided to maintain the feeler arm 90 inoperative position, substantially as indicated in Figs. 2 and The feeler arm 90 has its end portion extended toward the rear in proximity to the inner end of the shuttle-box at the filling replenishing side of the loom, and the feeler arm is of a length such that when the shuttle-box at the filling replenishing side of the loom is in weaving position, the end 94 of the feeler 90 will. not be in the way of the shuttle movement or not cross the path of shuttle-movement when the lay is in its front position. Upon call for filling replen ishment, however, the shuttle-box is moved from its normal weaving position toward the front of the lay, substantially as indicated in Fig. 3, and when in sueh position,
the end 94 of the 'feeler arm 90 will, as the lay'moves to its front position, pass the in.- ner end of the shuttle provided it is properly positioned for replenishment in the, shuttle ox; but if the shuttle should not be prop-- erly positioned, then the end 94 of the feeler arm 90 will contact with the shuttle as the lay beats up and the-1rm90 will be moved frontwardljgthereby turning the dagger 82 about itspivotal connection with the arm and depressing the end 83 of the dagger 82 out of the path of movement of the banter 84,.with the result that the hunter 8} fails to contact with and move the dagger 83 under' the conditions stated, and the trans ferrer arm remains inactive.
In order to htld the dagger 8Q the :t'eeler arm in their normal positions as hereinbefore described, there is'pivoted at 95 on the loom frame, a finger 96, the end of which engages below the lug 92 ot the dagger 83, and under the impulse of the spring 97 acting upon the end 98 of said finger, holds the dagger and feeler arm in operative position, substantially as indicated in Fig. 2. A pin 99 serves to-limit the up ward movement of the finger 96 and define the normal operative position of the parts.
The particular. means hereinbefore described constitute a good, practical form of the invention, the essentials of which, however, may be embodied in different particulars of structure; and it will be evident that looms of the overpick type now in use may be readily adapted by slight changes, to embody the features of the present invention. The toggle means for operating the shuttle-box carrying frame at the replenishing side of the loomrhas been found. to be well adapted to its purpose. but obviously other means might be employed for thus imparting to the said shuttle-box its addi-' tional movement toward the front of the loom to carry it into a position from below the picker spindle for the action of the replenishing mechanism. It will be noted, also, that the hopper for the filling carriers has a vre'arwardly extending opening through which the carrier next to be transferred is moved and placed in transferring position between the spring arms. The transferring position of the carrier next to be transferred is above but-forward of the position of the shuttle in the box when the lay has reached its limit of forward movement during normal weaving operations; but when the shuttie-box is given its additional frontward movement for the change of filling, the shut tle in the box becomes positioned substantially beneath the filling carrier next tobe transferred. 1 y
What is claimed is '1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle-boxes, a hopper for containing filling carriers, means for transferring a filling carrier from'said hopper to one of said shuttle boxes, and means for moving the shuttle-box to one side of the lay when a carrier is to be transferred thereto.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle-boxes, means for moving the lay and shuttle-boxes toward and from the front of the loom, filling replenishing mechanism, means for givingone I of the shuttle-boxes an additional movement toward the front of the loom to position it for replenishment, and means acting through the lay and normally above the top of the shuttle boxes, filling replenishing mechani'sm, and means for. IllflOVlIlQI one of the shut tie-boxes from under said part of the picking -mechanism when the filling is to he changed to position it for replenishment.
4c. In a filling replenishing loom, the eonn bination of the lay and shuttle-bones, picker spindles or guide rods above the shuttlehoxes, filling replenishing mechanisn'i, and means for relatively moving the shuttle-hex and picker spindle or guide rod at the replenishing side of the loom laterally ot the lay out of their normal relation when the filling is to he changed to permit the filling carrier to he transferred to the shuttle.
5. ln'a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle-boxes, picker spindles carried by the lay above the shuttleboxes, filling replenishing mechanism, and means for moving the shuttle-box at the filling replenishing, side of the loom from under the picker spindle when the filling is to bechang'ed. 6. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttleehoxes, a
source of filling carrier supply, a transferrer for transferringa filling carrier from said source of supply through the top of the shuttle-box, and means for-moving said shuttle-box independently of the lay in the direction of lay movement when the filling is to be replenished to position the shuttlehoX for the reception of a filling carrier.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, means for moving the lay backward and forward, shuttle-boxes movable with the lay, a source of filling carrier supply, a transferrer, means for moving the transferrer in a path in front of the lay when the latter is in front position, and
means for moving one of the shuttle-looxes independently of the lay to place it in the path of the transferrer when the filling is to be replenished. l
8. In a filling replenishing overpiolr spindlescarried by the lay, pickers movahle relatively thereto for pickingthe shuttle, shuttle-boxes movalole with the layfilling replenishing mechanism, and means for moving one of said shuttle-boxes relatively to the lay to a position clear of the picker spindle that the replenishing mechanism may transfer a filling carrier to said shuttleboX when filling is to he replenished.
9. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, shuttle-hoxes movable therewith, filling" replenishing mechanism,
means for moving oneof said shuttle-hoses independently of'the lay to position it for theaction of said mechanism when the till ing is'to be replen shed, and means for preventing operation voi thereplenishing mechanismyvlhen'the shuttle is not properly positioned in the hoxas the latteris moved independently of the lay.

In an over-pick loom, the comhina- ,tion of the lay and shuttle-looses, a picker spindle carried by the lay adjacent each shnttle hox, a hopper for containing filling carriers, a trans'ferrer, means for moving one of the shuttle-boxes toward the front of the loom beyond the front position of the lay when the filling is to he replenished, means for operating the transferrer, and means to prevent operation of the transferer 'When the shuttle is not properly positioned in the box as it is moved beyond the front of the lay.
