a citizen oi the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county ot` Fayette and 5 State oit' Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pistonlacking; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pistons or piston packing, and more particularly to pistons of that class or type in which a metallic packing is used :for maintaining the pisvton fluid-tight within the working cylinder of a steam or other motive-power engine.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and durable expansible metallic packing adapted to prevent leakage of the motive-power fluid as the piston is moved back and forth within the working cylinder. f
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described; with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

samel reference letters are used .to denote corresponding parts in dili'erent views, the letter A may denote the head of a piston, which shown fitted within a cylinder l, and provided with a reduced section integral with or secured to a disk (L1 so as to provide an annular recess to receive and retain metallic packing whtereby leakage of the motive-power luid prevented; said recess being ot' the desired width to receive and confine between the piston head proper and the disk a. one or more double conoidal rings and a plurality of band rings, preierably two double conoidal rings being cmployed each having a pair ot band rings fitted thereon, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The double conoidal ring l) consists preferably oi rolled spring steel adapted to secure the desired resiliency, though other suitable metal may be used. The ring D is V-shaped in cross section and provided with slots (l in opposite walls thereof arranged in staggered relation and adapted `to compensate for any lateral expansion or contraction due to heating or cooling and to facilitate assembling, the ring being split, as at (Z1, to adapt it to expand or contract in diameter. Two outer or band rings E and F are fitted around the ring D, one uponveach inclined side thereof, each being split, as shown, to adapt it to expand or contract, and each has one side thereof cut or machined ofl', as at c, to adapt 'it to lit closely against the correspolnlingly inclined side wall of the .ring D, while the outer sides thereof are plain or smooth to adapt them to lit closely' against the side walls ot' the recess in the piston headT-ln order to preventl rotary movement of olie ring independently of the other and to insure an absolutely leak-proof joint, one (or both) of the rings E and F may be held in a fixed position relatively to the ring D by means of a flange or projection f on the ring D engaging an oblong recess f1 in the adjacent band ring extending from the inner edge thereof substantially at right anto the circle described by the ring, so as to form an interlocking connection, which will permit the rings to be easily assembled or disconnected permitting sidewise movement and radial expansion and contraction of the outer ring and at the same time render it impossible for the splits in the adjoining rings to beV thrown into alinement ,E and F, as shown in Fig. 6, to receive a segment or sealing plate G, bridging the space or opening formed by the split, so as to seal, the joint Without interfering with the expansion or contraction of the ring. Instead of segmental plate )fitting a correspondingly shaped recess, as shown in Figs.
6 and 8, the may encircle or extend entirely around the edge of the band ring and a. split seal ring of equal length with the band ring` may be used to seal the joint between the end portions of the band ring Where the split occurs; as indicatedv by the fragmentary vien7 Fig. 7'.
lli/'hen two or more double eonoidal rings are used, it is preferable to provide a seal for the split in the two outer rings only, as shown in 'Fig'. 8, as the two center rings eX- pand equally against the cylinder Walls and are themselves locked to the conoidal rings so as to l'orm a permanent seal.
The advantages oi' my improved metallic packing will be apparent to 4those familiar with the art. l)The peculiar formation of the double eonoidal ring and its resiliency adapt it when placed Within the llshaped recess formed by the overlying juxtaposed band rings and compressed therebetween to expand laterally and circumferentially, exerting` a pressure that tends to open or expand the band rings so as to hold the peripheral portions thereof in close contact with the interior Wall of the cylinder and also to force them against the side Walls of the recess in the piston head, thus rendering the packing thoroughly eiective in preserving the piston fluid-tight Within the cylinder while permitting the several rings to be readily assembled and taken apart, and any Wear which takes place between the rings and cylinder or between the rings themselves will be automatically taken up and at theA same time a fluid-tight connection will be ln order to maintained, and the Wear on the several parts reduced and rendered uniform. The hollow or if-shaped form of the double eonoid al ringr also combines lightness With strength and its resiliency is :increased by the slots arranged in staggered relation in, its outer inclined Walls.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Let-v ters Patent of the United States is l. A packing for pistons'comprising a resilient double conoidal split ring provided with open-ended slots arranged in staggered relation in the `colloidal Walls thereof, the open-ends ot the slots being at the base of the cone, together With outer split rings fitting upon the conoidal surfaces of the first mentioned ring.-
