SAMUEL L. JONES, OF DENNYSVILLE,MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,997, dated February 27, 1872.
which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of my washing-machine.
It is intended for use with a common washtub, the part A of the machine constituting a cover therefor. From such part A, which is circular inform, four or any other suitable number of fingers or round bars, aa a a, are extended in pairs, as shown. There is a cylindrical hole, I), through the central part of the cover A to receive a vertical shaft, 0, extended up from the center of a disk, D, such disk being furnished with a crossbar, E, arranged diametrically upon its top,.and the said bar being provided with two series or pairs of the fingers or round bars b b b I), arranged as shown. The shaft extends below the disk a short distance, so as to rest on the bottom of the tub, or in a pivot extended up therefrom. Furthermore, the shaft has upon its top a hand-lever,
F, which has a mortise, d, in it to receive a tenon, e, projecting from the shaft. When the said machine is applied to awash-tub, the cover A rests on the rim of the tub, while the disk, with what may be below the cover, will be within the tub. The disk may be perforated with holes, if desirable. It is better to have it so, as a better circulation of the washing liquid is effected thereby.
The tub being supplied with a detergent liquid and one or more articles to'be washed, a person, to effect the washing of such article or articles, has only to lay hold of the handlever and give to it a quick reciprocating movement horizontally, so as to produce a reciprocating rotary movement of the dasher or disk and parts fixed thereto. By the action of the pins or fingers of the dasher and cover, the clothes will be squeezed and the liquid agitated in a manner so as to cause clothes to be soon and very effectively cleansed.
I claim- The washing machine, as described, composed of the cover and its fingers and the disk, the shaft, the diameter-bar, and the series of fingers, all being arranged as and for application to a tub, and to operate as described.
