DISPENSING ing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for supplying lubricant to bearings and other parts of automobiles'or other machinery which are generally treated with lubricants of a rather heavy consistency.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus by the use of which the lubricant will be provided or stored in such manner that it can be easily handled without coming in direct contact with the hands or clothes of the user.
And a further object of the invention is to provide simple means whereby the lubricant may be applied directly to the parts needmg lubrication.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved apparatus;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the can or receptacle in which the lubricant is stored;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a lifter which may be provlded to effect withdrawal of the plunger or cap which is fitted within the can or tank and bears directly upon the body of the lubricant.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a can or tank 1 which is preferably constructed with a conical bottom 2 so that the lybricant will be prevented from collecting in the bottom of the can in such form that it cannot be withdrawn. The to or upper end of the car is open, and in the said upper end I fit a plunger 3 which is in the form oE-a ring having a conical body 4. rising from its lower edge and extending through the ring and above the upper edgeof the same. The apex of the cone is removed and a nozzle 5 formed thereat. The ring 3 should be-ot such an external diameter that it will lit closely within the canor tank '1 but may descend within the can or tank as the lubricant is withdrawn. Upon the upper surface, of the conical body -'I- I provide the oll'sets (i which may conveniently be formed of sheet metal bent to the cHAnLEY R. HEt EIN, or GREENSBURG; PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. i Pafnted A 11 28, 1917 Application filed December 4,1916. Serial No. 134,978.
proper shape and secured rigidly to the body l and the nozzle. or spout 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. These oli'sets provide stops to limit the extent to. which theextractor 7 may be inserted over the nozzleli and also provide means to be engaged by the lifter 8 when it is desired to withdraw or 't'ollower "from the can.
it will be noted. upon reference to Fig. l. that the lifter 8 is formed by doubling a stout wire and twisting the branches of the same upon each other so as to provide a shank having a handle member9 at one end and having spaced fingers 10 at the opposite end. The fingers 10 may be engaged under the offsets 6 at opposite sides of the nozzle or spout 5 and the plunger the plunger or Follower thereby readily withdrawn from the can or tank.
'lfhecxtractor 7 may be of any well known construction, comprising a. cylindrical body having a reduced end 11 forming a spout which may beengaged over the nozzle or spout 5 and fitted snugly thereon. piston 12, within the cylimlrieal'body, is secured upon a piston rod 13 which extends through the upper end of the cylinder and The is equipped with a handle ll, as will be readily understood.
It. is thought the manner of using my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings. The can or tank 1 is filled with the lubricant and the plunger or follower then titted in the upper end of the tank so, as to rest directly upon the lubricant. Preferably, theplunger will be, pressed down onto the lubricant so that the lubricant will fill the conical body of the follower. The extractor 7 is fitted upon the spout or nozzle 5, as shown in the drawings, with the piston 12 at the end of the cylinder forming thespoutll. .By holding the cylinder stationary and against the Follower, while drawing the piston away from the spout 11. the lubricantwill be drawn into the cylinder so as to fill the same. W hen the cylinder has been filled, it is detached from the follower and the lubricant will remain therein until theextractor has been carried to or placed directly upon the hearings or other part to be lubricated whereiuion the piston will be operated to expel the lubricant. as will be readily understood. .\s the supply of lubricant is be found highly eiiicient when in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising a receptacle having a conical bottom, a follower fitting closely within the receptacle and having a conical body adapted to rest on the conical bottom of the receptacle, a nozzle projecting upwardly from the apex of the conical body, a cylinder having its lower end adapted to fit snugly upon said nozzle, a piston working in said cylinder, and oif-sets projecting laterally from the nozzle on the follower at opposite points of the same to limit the engagement of the cylinder over the nozzle,
the elf-sets being spaced from the conical body of the follower whereby they may be engaged by a lifting device.
