i MATTRESS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
To all rwhom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDonE F. KRoN- LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed mattresses and has for its object to provide a mattress which does not need any additional spring mattress but which can be laid directly on slats or on boards; which is reversible; and which is specially comfortable in use.
I attain these and other objects by thedevices and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical section of an edge of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention.
This mattress being reversible, it is evident that both top and bottom are of identical construction, hence it will onl'ybe necessary to describe one side and it will be understood to apply equally to either side.
A spring mattress occupies the center of this mattress andconsists of double cone spiral springs 1, mounted between two wire fabrics on interlocked longitudinal wires 2 and transverse wires 3, and bordered 'by heavy edge wires 4, in the usual way. Next` to this wire fabric is laid a thickness of burlap 5, then comes one or two layers 6 of cotton felt, properly tufted, and outside of that comes another thickness 7 of untuftedV cotton felt with a covering of ticking 8. The edges of the cotton layers together with the ticking and burlap, are passedaround the heavy border wire 4 to form a rolled edge 9. The space between the two rolls 9 thus formed, is closed by a band of burlap 10 outside of which is a layer of cotton felt 11 covered by ticking 12.
Thus it will be seen that the mattress thus formed has the springiness of the spring mattress within it, cushioned by the four layers of cotton felting, and is therefore very' soft, while the Wire fabric made by the Wires 2 and 3 distribute the strains over the surface of the mattress.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a mattress, the combination 'with a compressible spring structure; interlocked wire fabrics on each side of said spring structure and secured thereto; surrounding border Wires secured to said Wire fabrics; coarse cloth outside of said wire fabrics; a layer of tufted cotton felt outside of each said coarse cloth; a layer of untufted cotton felt outside of each said tufted cotton felt layer and separated therefrom by cloth; a covering of cloth; all said cloth and felt parts being rolled around the adjacent border wires; and cotton feltbetween the said rolls on a side and mounted between an inner coarse cloth 'and an outer covering of cloth.
