To all wkom it may concern.

Be it known that I, Josnrn a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Combined Tobacco and Match Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and

exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combined to-- bacco and match box and has for one of its objects, the provision of a device of this character, whereby various articles used in connection with smoking, may be stored in a compact article and which may be easily and conveniently carried within the pocket of the user.

Another object of this inventlon is to provide a casing having various compartments, in which tobacco, matches and clgaret'te papers may be stored, and which articles may be conveniently dispensed from the casing when desired.

A further object of this invention 1s to provide means uponthe casing for engaging and dispensing a match from the match compartment when desired.

A further object of this invention is to provide means within the casing to receive the head of a match and which will ignite the -match when withdrawn from the casing.

A further object of this invention is to provide a rack or holder within the casing for supporting cigarette papers and which is capable of being artially swung from the casing to permit t e cigarette papers to be withdrawn from the, rack or holder whenever desired.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a combined tobacco and match box of the above stated character,

' which shall be simple, durable and efficient,

and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of arts as will be hereinafter more fully escribed and claimed.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 mdicates a casing having formed upon one end thereof, heads 2 forming guides for receiving an end wall 3. The end wall 3 has its edges curved as illus- 1 trated at 4 to receive the beads 2 for slidably securing the end wall 3 to the casing. An end wall 5 has a retaining flange 6 formed thereon for engaging the other end of the casing 1 whereby when the end walls 3 and 5 are applied to.the casing, the same is entirely closed.

' A substantially U-shaped member 7 is formed upon one of the walls of the casing 1 to form a compartment 8 for receiving a cigarette paper rack or holder 9. The cigarette paper rack or holder.9, consists of a body portion 10 which is bent upon itself as illustrated at 11 to form a space 12 for receiving one end of cigarette papers. The other end of the body 10 of the rack or holder 9 is bent as illustrated at 13 and bifurcated to form a pair of oppositely disposed tongues 14 for engaging the other ends of the cigarette papers to retain them upon the body 10 of the rack or holder 9 and providing a space between the tongues 14 for permitting the. cigarette papers to be withdrawn from the rack or holder. The end'wall 5 is provided with an elongated slot 15 to permit the rack or holder 9 to be inserted within the I obviating the necessity of scratchin compartment 8 andthe body portion 10 has formed thereon a hook 16 between the tongues 14 and disposed in oppos te direction thereto for engaging the flange 6 of the end wall 5 to retain the rack or holder 9 within the cigarette compartment 8. The body 10 of the rack or holder 9 is provided with an aperture 17 at the point of bend as illustrated at 11 and one of the tongues 14 is Provided with an aperture in almement with the aperture 17 for receiving a rod 18 having a handle 19 upon one end thereof. The rod 18 frictionally engages the walls of the opening so as to permit the handle 19 to act as a finger grip for partially withdrawing the rack or holder 9 from the casing as 1llustrated in Fig. 2 in dotted lines, so as the cigarette papers may be readily withdrawn from the rack or holder 9. If desired, the rod 18 may be withdrawn from the rack or holder 9 and used as a pipe cleaner. A substantially U-shaped member 20 is secured to one of the walls of the casing 1 and to the substantially U-shaped member 7 as illustrated in 'Fig. 3 which divides the casing 1 into a tobacco compartment 21 and a match compartment 22. A flexible member 24 is secured within the substantially U- shaped member 20 as illustrated at 25 and has its free end curved or bent as illustrated at 26. Secured to the free end of the flexible member 24 is a handle 27 which extends through alining apertures 28 in the substantially U-shaped member 20 and one of the walls of the casing 1 to dispose the handle 27 exteriorly of the casing. A block 29 is secured within the substantially U-shaped member 20 adjacent the free end of the flexible member 24 for cotiperating with the flexible member 24 for igniting a match. The end wall 5 of the casing 1 is provided with an eyelet or aperture 30 in registration with the substantially U-shaped member 20 for permitting the head of a match to be inserted therein and by pressing upon the handle 27, the flexible member 24 grips the match head between the same and the block 29 and by withdrawing the match from the casing or substantially U-shaped member 20 by way of the eyelet 30, the match is ignitelrll, t 0 match upon other articles. The su stantially U-shaped member 20 entirely incloses the match head and prevents any danger of the other articles stored within the casing 1' from becoming ignited from the flame of the match while within the substantially U- shaped member 20.

Matches may readily be placed within the match compartment 22 by removing either of the end walls 3 or 5. The end wall 5 is provided with a match outlet 31' adjacent one corner thereof and is normally closed by a hinged cover 32 which is pivoted to the end wall 5 as illustrated at 33 and is proaeaae shaped member 7 cooperates with one of the walls of the casing 1 in forming a pocket or groove 36 for receiving the matches therein and which is directly in alinement with the match outlet 31. One corner of the casing 1 is provided with an elongated slot 37 through which extends a handle 38 having secured thereto a match extractor 39 of substantially lL-shape in cross section and having its arm portions at one end thereof connected by a web 40 adapted to engage under a match within the pocket 36 and shove the same out through the match outlet 31 upon movement of the handle 38. The handle 38 has a guide or cufl 41 formed thereon which engages the walls of the casing to prevent any undue or lost motion of the handle and the match extractor within the elongated slot 37 thus it will be seen that by tipping the casing 1 slightly so that the matches will be received within the pocket 36 and by operating the handle 38, the matches one at a time will be dispensed through the match outlet 31.

Tobacco is stored within the tobacco compartment 21 and may be readily dispensed therefrom by sliding the end wall 3 upon the heads 2 a suflicient distance to permit the tobacco to pass outwardly of the compartment.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be'made without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
