DRAFT-RIGGING.
Application filed March 30, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mason B. GIBERsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft- Riggings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to draft' riggings for railway cars, and has particular reference to the means of connection with the coupler shank. It is the primary object of the invention to obtain a construction in which a strong connection is always maintained without the necessity for accurate fitting of the parts.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view partly in section;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section.
Figs. at, 5 and 6 represent the members detached.
A is the shank of the car coupler and B is the draft frame connected to said shank and for engaging the resilient buffers. This frame, as shown, is in the form of a yoke, the opposite sides of which are spaced for the reception of the buffer springs which are used in connection with suitable abutments (not shown). E is a head at the inner end of the shank A having shoulders F formed thereon adapted to engage hooks G formed at the ends of the yoke B, said. hooks being reinforced at G. H is a hood embracing the shank A and head E and also the ends of the strap B. This hood is provided with a slotted bearing I through which a key J is inserted to couple the same to the shank A. The contacting portions of the hood II and the strap B are wedgeshaped, and the arrangement is such that when the key J is inserted in the slotted hearing I and shank A, the hood will be drawn up to wedge the hook ends of the yoke into full engagement with the shoulders F.
The construction just described is one which is particularly advantageous because it is difficult to manufacture the parts to accurate sizes, and consequently there is Specification of Letters Patent.

danger of an imperfect engagement between the hooks G of the yoke and the shoulders F. IVith my improved device, however, this is impossible, as the engaging wedge surfaces K and L will always force the yoke against the head E of the coupler shank, so that the hooks G are fully engaged.
IVhat I claim as my invention is,
1. In a draft rigging for car couplers, the combination with a coupler shank and a shouldered head thereon, of a draft yoke provided with hooks for engaging the shoulders, a hood for embracing said yoke and shank, the hood and shank having contacting surfaces inclined relative to each other to provide a wedge engagement whereby said hood forces said hooks in full engagement with said shoulders, and means for securing said hood from displacement.
2. In a car coupler draft rigging, the c0mbination with the coupler shank and a shouldered head therefor, of a draft yoke embracing said head and provided with hooks for engaging the shoulders thereof, a hood embracing said shank and yoke, having wedged bearings upon the yoke, and a key for securing said hood to said shank and holding said wedge bearings in engagement.
3. In a car coupler draft rigging, the combination with the coupler shank of a shouldered head therefor, a draft yoke embracing said head and provided with wedgeshaped end portions and hooks for engag ing said shoulders, a hood embracing said yoke and shank having complementary wedge bearings, and a key for securing said hood to said shank and holding said wedge bearings in engagement.
i. A yoke for railway draft riggings which comprises a yoke proper having two spaced arms, the free ends of which are provided with shoulders to engage the upper and lower shoulders of an M. C. B. draw bar, the upper and lower faces of said ends being respectively upwardly and downwardly inclined, and a band encircling and slidable along said arms and having its upper and lower walls inclined to corre spond and fit with said inclined faces of the ends.
5. In a draft rigging for car couplers,
the combination with the coupler shank, of In testimony whereof I afiix my signature a draft yoke embraclng said shank, a hood in presence of two Witnesses.
embracing the engaging portions of said shank and yoke, a Wedging surface on said NELSON GIBEhbON' yoke, and a corresponding cooperating in WVitnesses: chned surface on sa1d hood whereby the WV. J. BELKNAP, former 1s clamped to said coupler shank, JAMES P. BARRY.
