To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN F. Dom, Jr., and MANUEL D. AVILLAR, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Garden City, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, and New York city, in the county and State of New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a flushing apparatus for urinals, sinks, and similar devices, which is actuated not manually as heretofore, but by means of a plunger adapted to be engaged by the trunk of the operator at or near his waist line. The construction is furthermore such, that the plunger projects a distance in front of the bowl, so that access to the latter cannot be had, until the water is turned on, thus greatly improving the sanitary conditions of lavatories in which the device is installed.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1-5, the numeral 1 represents the bowl of a urinal shown to be afiixed to a wall or partition 2, and adapted to be flushed from tank 3 by a pipe 1. At a distance above bowl 2, there is arranged, a preferably squared, horizontally disposed plunger 5, which normally projects a distance in front of the bowl and is here provided with a curved arm or.

pusher 6 adapted to be engaged by the body of the operator, preferably at or near the waist of the latter. Plunger 5 passes through a correspondingly squared tubular guide 7 projecting rearwardly from wall 2, and fitted by a shoulder 8 into an annular opening of the latter within which the guide is centered. to be. removably secured to wall 2, by means of screws 10, so that by removing the latter, the guide may be withdrawn. Plunger 5, is furnished at the front of wall 2 with a stop 11, that defines the length of its stroke, and at the rear of the wall with a spring 12, that tends to normally advance the same. Suitable means are provided for operatively connecting the rear end of the plunger with the valve 13 of the flushing tank, such means being by way of example, shown to consist of a cable 14 attached at one end to the plunger, thence passing over a pulley 15 of guide 7 and attached at its other end to the lever 16 which operates the valve. But these means may obviously be varied without departing from the spirit of our invention.

In the normal position of the parts, spring 12, so advances plunger 5, that pusher 6 is located a distance in front of bowl 1. Thus the operator on approaching the bowl will be intercepted by the pusher, and will be obliged to retract the same against action of spring 12, before gaining access to the bowl. In this way, a proper flushing of the tank is automatically effected, each time the urinal is used, thus adding greatly to the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of the lavatory.

We claim:

1. A flushing apparatus comprising a bowl, a. plunger arranged above the same, a pusher carried by the forward end of the plunger and located normally a distancein front of the bowl, and a water supply valve operatively connected to the plunger.
