LOGAN J. ANDERSON, OF WATER VALLEY, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT lN BALE-BAND STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,374, dated February 6, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Bale-Band Stretcher, invented by LOGAN J. ANDERSON, of Water Valley, in the county of Yallabusha and State of Mississippi.
This invention relates to baling cotton, hay, and all other merchantable commodities which are usually transported and sold in bales; and consists in a lever, clamp, or stretcher so constructed that the ends of the bands are griped and drawn together, and the band is tightly drawn around the bale, for fastening or tying, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure '1 is a side view, showing the stretcher in use. Fig. 2 is a view of the stretcher looking to the right from the line .90 00 ofFig. 1, as indicated by the arrow. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the lever, to which is attached, by a pivot-joint, the arm B, as seen at (J. The lever and the arm each terminate in an eccentric, D, to which is attached a staple-shaped gripe, E. This gripe is apiece of round steel,
bent at right angles so as to form three sides of asquare, one side of whichispassed through the eccentric hole, with the end riveted sufficiently to prevent withdrawal, but still leaving it loose in the hole. The hook f of the gripe passes over the face of the eccentric, as seen in Fig. 2.
In applying the stretcher, the bale-band G is slipped in between the hook and the face of the eccentric, and when the lever A is brought into the position seen in the drawing, the band is griped between the hooks f and the eccentric, and firmly held, so that it is drawn tightly around the bale. In this position the lever is held by the foot for the attachment of the 4 tie or buckle. The surface of the eccentrics and of the hooks may be ragged, as seen in Fig. 2, to preventtheband from slipping.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The lever A, arm A B, eccentrics D D, and gripers E E, or their equivalents, all arranged substantially as specified.
LOGAN J. ANDERSON.
