Description
E. L. STEVENS.
ROAD DRAG. APPLICATION FILED 0.20, 1915 Patenfed July 17, 1917 EDWARD Ii. STEVENS, OF LOVELAND, COLORADO.
ROAD-DRAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 19M.
, Application filed December 20, 1916. Serial No. 138,091.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loveland, in the. county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Drags, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in road drags and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same is readily and conveniently rendered reversible so as The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan with a portion broken away of a road drag constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-42 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated flat member having its transverse dimension vertically disposed and provided along its longitudinal margins with the forwardly disposed flanges 2 having the forward portions thereof reversely beveled, as indicated at 3, to afiord scraping or cutting edges, and overlying said beveled portions 3 are the metallic plates 4 to reinforce said margins of the member 1 as it is the purpose of my invention to have said member 1 produced of wood.
Adjacent its forward end the member 1 has securedthereto the rearwardly directed arm 5 disposed thereto on an angle of sub stantially and provided at its, outer end with the slot 6 in which is rotatably mounted the supporting wheel 7 adapted to travel over the road being worked. The major portion of the arm 5 is of a width mate rially less than the Width or transverse dimension of the member 1 so that the same is free of the roadway, and said arm 5 is provided with the inwardly disposed shoulders 8 to which are adapted to be secured the platforms P, said platforms P being also secured to the shoulders 9 arranged. longitudinally of the inner face of the member 1. It is also preferred that the member 1 and the outer end portion of the arm 5 be connected. by the'rigid brace member 10, as is thought to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.
F denotes a flexible member and preferably a linked chain which has its opposite extremities secured to the opposite end portions of the member 1 at substantially its transverse center. A double-tree or the like is adapted to be detachably hitched to the member F and it will be at once self-evident that the angle of the member 1 relative to the road may be readily varied in accordance with the portion of the member F with which the d uble-tree may be hitched.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a road drag constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with. which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A road drag comprising two members disposed in converging relation and having adjacent end portions connected one to the other, one of said members being of a length greater than that of the second member, the opposed faces of said members being provided with shoulders disposed longitudi nally thereof, a rigid brace member connecting the free end portions of the diverging members and interposed between the shoulders thereof, platforms supported by the shoulders of the diverging members and the brace member, the longer of the first two members being of a Width greater than the width of the second member, said longer member being provided with cutting edges entirely along its opposite outer longitudinal margin, the rear portion of the second of the diverging members being provided with a longitudinally disposed slot, a ground engaging wheel rotatably supported within said slot and extending above and below said short member, and a linked member having its extremities secured to the opposite end portions of the outer face of the longer of the diverging members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD L. STEVENS.
