Description

H. B. & E. C. PERKINS.
'Improvement in Nail Plate Feeders.
Ptented 12111.30
HARRISON B. PERKINS AND EDWIN C. PERKINS, OF OXFORD, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-PLATE FEEDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123390, dated January S0, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, H. B. PERKINS and E. C. PERKINS, of Oxford, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nail- Plate Feeder; and we do hereby decla-re the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being' had to the accompanying drawing forming part of the same, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of our improved nail-plate feeding machine. Fig.2 is a front view of the feeder proper. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the lower part of the feeder propem and Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the dotted line .r x of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures have reference to corresponding parts.
'I'his invention has reference to an improved nail-plate feeding machine; and it consists of an automatic feeder susceptible of vibratory motion, as well as being capable of clamping the nipper-rod for carrying it forward to permit of its plate having the nail cut from it, substantiallyY as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
To enable. others to make and use our inven tion we will proceed to describe it.
1n the annexed drawing, A refers to a frame, upon which one of' the cutters, a, with which the nail-plate is cut, is mounted or secured by means of an upright, al. B has reference to a conically-shaped receptacle, which is made with a curvilinear support or bar, b, pivoted to a bar projecting from the frame A. This receptacle is to receive the plate from which the nail is to be cut, it being provided with side grooves b for that purpose. U C1 refers to the feeder properf which is constituted of the uprights O O, connected together at the bottom, and of the cam-rod C1. The rod`C1 is pivoted to one of the uprights Oby forming its upper end with an axle or pivot, entering' an overhanging portion of said upright a-nd passing a screw'pivot, o, through the lower horizontal portion of' the said upright, and causing it to enter the said rod. The lower portion of the rod C1, is attached to a rod, D, which passes through the support b in such a nia-nner as to have lateral movement, such being communicated thereto by being broughtin contact with a beveled or inclined projection, c2, fastened to the upright al, when the receptacle B is operated or thrown back and forth. The upper part of this rod C1 has a wedge-like shape, which acts as a cam, and gripes or clamps the nipper-rod E as the same is vib ated through the striking of the rod D against itsproljection.
It will be seen as the rod Cl gripes or clamps the nipper-rod E the latter will be carried forward so that its plate will be brought in coutact with the cutter of the nail-machine when the nail is to cut.
The movement of the rod D imparts a vibratory motion to the cam-rod C1, causing the latter, as hereinhefore stated, to gripe the nipper-rod. The feeder C O1 is hung upon centers c o within the frame O2, said frame being ina-de up'on the outer end of abar, C, which is firnilyboltedorotherwise secured to thesupport b. F is a bar or support, upon which the nipperrod E rests, and which is supplied with pins or projl cctions e for guiding' it as it is lnoved f'orward. fis a metallic rod fastened tothe support F, and bent in such a manner as that it will make a stop for and retain the feeder O C1 in its properposition or counteract the action of the spring' j". f refers to a spring which is fastened at the upper end to the support F, and its lower end made to press or rest against the feeder C O1, and is for the purpose of throwing the latter back against the stop or rod fin the position it occupied previous to its being thrown forward.
The power to operate the machine is applied at G, which communicates motion through the shaft having the eccentric q to the said eccentric, and the connecting-rod g', from which the said motion is conveyed to the receptacle B.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the reciprocating arm b, the rod 1), and the feeding device O O1, said device being constructed and operating in the manner set forth.
2. The combination of the feeding device C C1, the support F, and the spring j", as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention, we hereunto sign our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
