Description

L. M. LUSK.
Improvement in Lifting Jacks.
Patented Jan. 30, 1872.
Wwf/fades LEWIS M. LUSK, OF OENTRETON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTING-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,270, dated January 30, 1872.
lresent-s a side elevation of a jack embracing my improvements, with a portion of the inclosing-plate thereof broken away to show the interior construction and manner of operation of said jack.
My invention consists in the employment of I two plates of wood or metal, having a space between them of suftlcient width to receive the vertically-1noving beam and its operating levers, which width is occasioned by two intermediate strips or projections, which serve also as guides to keep said beam in a vertical line in its ascent or descent, the whole so arranged as that said levers may be together used to exert a lifting force or alternately used and held at any desired position, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A A represent the two inclosing-plates of the lifting jack, of any suitable form, and constructed of wood or metal, as may be preferable. rlhese plates A A are separated by two strips or projections7 B B, to such a distance as will admit between them the vertically-moving beam C and the actuating levers D D. This beam O is provided on either side with spurgearing, into which the cogs on the levers D D', match and serve to raise or lower the said beam, as may be required. The division strips B B (or one of the plates A may be cast with vertical projections thereon to serve the sa-me purpose) not only separate the inclosing-plates A Af, but act, as arranged, as guides to keep the lifting-beam in a vertical position during its movement. One of the levers D is provided with notches a, into which a pawl, E, drops to hold the lifting-beam at any desired height to which it m a-y be carried by the combined action of the levers. The inclosing-plates are held together by screwbolts b or in any other suitable manner. It is contemplated to dispense with one of the levers in the use of my device as a wagon-jack, and when so used it is only necessary that one side ot' the lifting-beam be provided with cogs, but the inclosing-plates are arranged with division guiding-plates, as in the double jack, to keep said lifting-beam steady in its vertical movement.
Having described my invention, I claim- The jack herein described and` shown, having avertical lifting-beam, O, moving between guiding-strips or projections B, which also serve to sepa-rate the inclosingplates A A to avoid the binding ot' the actuating levers D D and of the said lifting-beam, the whole constructed and operating as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
LEV. M. LUSK.
