ARC-LAMP.
Application filed July 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THERON H. WILLIAMS, citizen of the United States, residing at Mart, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Arc-Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to are lamps and in particular to the clutching mechanism for the upper electrode and resides in employing a spring structure that operates upon a clutch carrier to release the clutch. This spring lever mechanism desirably includes a leaf spring, a rod, and a pivoted lever through which the leaf spring operates upon the clutch mechanism.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a side view of an arc lamp embracing the invention; Fig. 2 is another elevation of the lamp; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The lamp frame 1 carries a magnet, preferably in the form of a. solenoid 2 which is adapted for inclusion in serial circuit relation with the electrodes 3 and 4. The solenoid core 5 is connected with lever 7 by a dashpot structure 6. The upper end of this lever is in operative engagement with a vertically reciprocable bar 8 having a hook for mation that receives the lever 7. This bar has a vertical slot 10 through which the shank of a screw 11 is passed into engagement with a bracket 12 projecting laterally from a vertical guide bar 13 that is mounted upon the frame 1. The body portion 14 of a spring jack structure (constituting the preferred form of holder for the upper electrode) is adapted for vertical movement along the bar which directs said portion 14 The spring portion 15 of a spring jack structure is mounted upon the body portion 14 and the upper electrode 3 is received at its upper end into Specification of Letters Patent.

the spacing between the spring 15 and the body portion 14. The bar 8 has attached thereto the upper end of a rod 16 whose lower end is connected with one end of a clutch ring 17 to one side of the upper elec trode 3 that passes through said clutch ring. The clutch ring is pivoted, on a diameter that is at right angles to the diameter at which the rod 16 is connected with the clutch ring, to a clutch carrier 18 that is in turn pivoted to the offset portion of the lower end of the bar 13, the pivotal axes of the clutch ring and clutch carrier being desirably in the same plane though at right angles or transverse to each other to render the mechanism more effective in operation. The clutch carrier is engaged by a spring lever mechanism that desirably includes a rod 19 that is pressed downwardly upon by a bell crank lever 20 which is pivoted at its elbow upon a bracket extension of the bar 13. One end of the bell crank lever engages the upper end of the rod 19 and the other end of this bell crank lever is pressed upon by the lower and free end of a lever spring 21 whose upper end is anchored to the bar 13. lVhen the lamp is switched into circuit (the circuit connections of the solenoid 2 and the electrodes 3 and 4 being apparent to those skilled in the art) the solenoid will operate through the described connection to lift the rod 16 to tilt the clutch ring 12 and engage it with the upper electrode 3 (which is preferably carbon) and separate it from the lower electrode 4 (which is preferably copper) to establish the arc, the clutch ring 17 being initially unopposed in its tilting movement so that it may rapidly engage the upper electrode preparatory to lifting it. After the clutch ring has effectively engaged the upper electrode the clutch rod 16 is coupled with the clutch carrier 18 and lifts the clutch carrier against the force of the spring 21 which is thereby placed under tension to enable it to depress the clutch carrier and the clutch ring when the are becomes unduly elongated. The spring 21 thus operates to move the upper electrode toward the lower electrode, the solenoid operating to separate the electrodes, these two agencies combining to regulate the arc. The slot 10 is bridged by a pin 22 that acts as a stop to limit the extent to which the clutch ring may be raised upwardly at the end thereof which is connected with the rod 16.
The bar 13 carries a heat shield 23 which is interposed between the electrodes and the clutch mechanism'to protect the latter from the heat of the arc.
While I have herein shown and particu larly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. An arc lamp including a holder for the upper electrode; a vertical guide bar along which the holder may descend; a clutch carrier pivotally mounted upon the guide bar; a clutch pivotally mounted upon the clutch carrier, the axes of movement of the clutch carrier and clutch being transverse with respect to each other; a bell crank lever mounted upon the guide bar; a spring also mounted upon the guide bar and operating upon one end of the bell crank lever; and a rod whose upper end is engaged by and is operated upon by the other end of the bell crank lever and whose lower end engages the clutch carrier.
2. An arc lamp including a holder for the upper electrode; a vertical guide bar along which the holder may descend; a clutch carrier pivotally mounted upon the guide bar; a clutch pivotally mounted upon the clutch carrier; the axes of movement of the clutch carrier and clutch being transverse with respect to each other; a rod engaging the clutch carrier; and a spring pressing the rod upon the clutch carrier.
