ADJUSTABLE TRY-SQUARE.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ScHnEDnR, a citizen of the United States, residing atv New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Try-Squares, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act specification.
This invention relates to try-squares, and has for its obj ect to providea square of this kind with means for adjusting the blade laterally and edgewise with respect to the head for truing up the square when the blade becomes displaced laterally or edgewise out of the proper angle with the head.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawing, which constitutes part of this speciication, and then more specifically de fined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a try-square made substantially in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a reverse side elevation of the try-square.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line V-V of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line VI-VI of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, 1 designates the blade and 2 the head which are designed to have a predetermined angular relation. One end of the head 2 is bifurcated, as at 3, to receive one end of the blade 1, said blade being somewhat thinner than the bifurcation or slot 3. The inner edge of the blade is also spaced from the bottom of the bifurcation 3, as shown at 4 in Fig. 4, whereby said blade is capable of adjustment laterally and edgewise in the bifurcation to correct any lateral and edgewise displacement of the blade with respect to the head.
The blade is pivotally secured to the head by a screw 5 passed loosely through an opening 6, in the blade, having rounded edges as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The edgewise adjustment of the blade in the head is effected by a pair of threaded pins 7 extending lon- Specification of Letters Patent.

gitudinally through the head and projecting into the bifurcation 3 at opposite sides of the pivot It will be readily understood that by advancing one of the screw-threaded pins 7 and retracting the other one of said pins, the blade may be moved edgewise to change its angle with respect to the head, as suggested by the dotted lines S, Fig. l1.
The lateral adjustment of the blade with respect to the head in order to correct any warping of the blade, is effected by opposed sets of screws 9 and 10 carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation 3. As shown in the drawings, there are four screws in each set, but the number may be varied if desired. It will readily be seen, especially from Fig. 3, that by advancing or retracting the screws 9 and correspondingly retractng or advancing the opposed screws 10, the blade 1 may be moved laterally as suggested by the dotted lines 11, Fig. 3. The rounded edges of the opening 6, as also shown in this figure, prevent the blade from binding on the pivot screw 5.
It will also be noted that the blade may be reversed to bring either the straight or beveled edge thereof into use, or the two opposite edges of the blade may be made alike either straight or beveled. In addition to serving as a pivot for the blade, the screw 5 also prevents the forks of the head fro-m spreading when the set screws 9 and 10 are tightened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A square comprising a blade, a head having a bifurcation, means for pivoting the blade in said bifurcation, and means for rocking the blade laterally on its pivot and clamping said blade at dierent points of said rocking lateral adjustment.
2. A square, comprising a blade, a head having a bifurcation, means for pivoting the blade in said bifurcation, and opposed adjusting means carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation for moving the blade laterally with respect to the head.
3. A square, comprising a blade, a head having a bifurcation, a pivot screw carried by the head, the blade having an opening with rounded edges through which the pivot screw is passed, and means for adjusting the blade laterally in the bifurcation.
4. A square, comprising a head having a bifurcation, a blade pivoted in said bifurcation, and opposed sets of adjusting screws carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation for moving the blade laterally in the bifurcation.
5. A square, comprising a head having va bifurcation, a blade pivoted in said bifurcation, threaded pins carried by the head and engaging the edge of the blade in the bifurcation at opposite sides of the pivot for moving said blade edgewise in the bifurcation, and opposed screws carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation for adjusting the blade laterally in the bifurcation.
6. A square, comprising a head having a bifurcation, a blade having one end portion arranged in said bifurcation, set screws carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation for adjusting the blade laterally with respect to the head, and means to prevent the forks from spreading when the set screws are tightened against the blade.
7. A square, comprising a head having a bifurcation, a blade having one end portion arranged in said bifurcation, set screws carried by the opposite forks of the bifurcation for adjusting the blade laterally with respect to the head, and a screw passed through the forks and blade for preventing said forks from spreading when the set screws are tightened against the blade.
