To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pownns A. Wronns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Butt Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hooks, such as which are used for carrying a rope or cable. Frequently, when a hook of this character is being used for lifting or hauling objects, the rope or cable will accidentally slip ofi the hook.
The object of my invention is to provide a hook with simple means for preventing the displacement of the line, or other object from the hook while the latter is doing work.
I attain the object of my invention by combining with my butt-hook a latch element adapted to be interlocked with, and released from, the bill of the hook by the simple act of positioning the shackle in its line of draft and rotating the same through an arc of 90 degrees.
The construction and operation of my improved hook will be more readily understood from a detailed description of the accompanying drawings constituting a part hereof.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a butthook embodying my invention.

Fig. 3 shows a vertical sectional elevation of my improved hook with the shackle rotated 90 degrees, for the purpose of disengaging the latch bar from the bill of the hook.
The shackle a is preferably made bifurcated. The extremities a having holes drilled therein, in which is inserted the shackle hinge pin 22. The shackle or hinge pin Z) is made nonrotatable relative to the shackle. This may be effected by any convenient means; as shown, the holes in the shackle ends a,and the pin 6 are made with flat portions as indicated at 79, in Fig. 3, for the purpose stated. The extremities of the shackle or the shackle hinge-pin Z) are formed with trunnions 0 located on an axis eccentric to the axis of rotation of the shackle. In the construction shown, the
trunnions are formed by drilling an eccentric longitudinal hole in the shackle-pin, and driving a pin 0 therethrough. Between the extremities a of the shackle a, there is hinged on the hinge pin 5, a hook all, provided at its bill with the latch notch or recess 6. On the trunnions c are hinged the arms 7", of the bifurcate latch f, and the latter is provided with a cross-bar or portion 9', adapted to engage in said latch notch c.
From the description given it is evident that the rotation of the shackle a, through an arc of 90 degrees will move the trunnions c from the position shown in Fig. 2, to the position shown in Fig. 3, in so doing moving the cross-bar g of the latch f out of engagement from the notch or recess e of the bill of the hook cl. The latch 7 may then be swung free of the hook and the rope or cable carried by the latter may be removed. When the hook is to be used in Work such as suspending or holding an object, the latch f is first moved into its position in Fig. 3. The load may then be affixed on the hook, the latch arranged so that its cross bar 9 will rest against the bill of the hook, and by then moving the shackle into its load-pulling position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and also indicated in Fig. 3 by broken outline, said cross bar of the latch f will be drawn into the recess 6 of the bill of the hook, and in so doing lock the latch f in place and prevent the accidental dislodging of the load, preventing any accidental displacement of the rope or cable carried by the hook.
I claim:
1. In a butt-hook, the combination of a clevis, a hinge pin carried non-rotatably by the extremities of the clevis, a hook hinged on said pin, trunnions projecting from the extremities of said hinge pin and located eccentric to the axis of the latter, a latch hinged on said trunnions, means on the bill of the hook for engaging the middle part of the latch, whereby, when said clevis is p0- sitioned in the line of draft, the middle portion of the latch will be locked with the bill of the hook, and when said clevis is rotated out of its line of draft said latch will be released.
2. In a butt-hook, the combination of a clevis, a hinge pin carried non-rotatably by to receive the middle part of said latch whereby, when said clevis is positioned in the line of draft, the middle portion of the latch Will be locked with the bill of the 10 hook, and when said clevis is rotated out of its line of draft said latch Will be released.
