Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of lDupage and State of lllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway Draft-Riggings,..of which the following is av full,clear, concise, and exact description, reference being Nhad Yto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway draft riggings.
llhe object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway cars of ecient construction, high capacity, and relatively few and inexpensive parts.
rlhe invention furthermore consists in improvements in the parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices as herein shown, described and made the subject-matter of claims.
lln the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical section of a draft rigging showing one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 isa horizontal section taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views taken substantially on'the lines3-3 and 4-'4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the friction shell employed in my mechanism. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing a portion yof the wedge or spreader and one of the shoes -employed in the friction mechanism.
ln said drawing, the center sills or draft sills of the car are designated by the reference 10, the same having secured thereto` front stops 11 and rear stops 12. Each of the stops 11 and 12 is provided with a main stop shoulder 13, a limiting stop shoulder 14, and an inner shoulder 15, the function of which will appear hereinafter. rllhe front stops 11 are also slotted as indicated at 16, to accommodate the coupler connecting key. Mounted between the sills, and intermediate the front and rear stops, is a friction shell 17, shown most clearly in Fig 5. The shell 17 comprises a main cylindrical portion 18 Vhaving an inner friction surface, and side ,walls lil-19, said side walls being-forwardly and rearwardly extended as indicated at 20--20, said extensions engaging the inner shoulders l5 of the stops, whereby Specicaton of Letters Zlatent.

coil 23 and an inner coil 24. Front and rear followers 25`.25 are provided, and also front intermediate, and rear intermediate followers 26. Each of the followers 25-25 is formed with an annular groove 27 on its inner side, in which is adaptedl to be received one end of the main coil 23 of the spring, and the inner annular shoulder 28 of each of the followers forms an abutment for the inner coil of the spring. The inter- 'mediate followers are formed on their inner sides similarly to the end followers, and in addition the intermediate followers are provided with annular inwardly extending .danges 29, which, in normal position of the gear, engage the ends of a plurality of circularly arranged friction shoes 30 lslidably mounted within the friction shell 17, and, as will be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2, the shoulders 31 formed by the ends of the friction shell 18 proper, serve as the intermediate stops for the intermediate followers 26w26.
The' gear is operated from the draw bar 32 by means of a tail bolt, designated generally by the reference A, said tail-bolt extending through centralrecesses in all of the followers, and is composed of two like parts 33, ,each member 33 having a main semi-cylindrical portion 34 having a shoulder 35 at the front end thereof, against which the rear 'end of the draw bar abuts', and a forwardly gages in the annular groove 38. The members 139 are detachably secured together by means of bolts and nuts 41. lt will also be observed that the collar 39 engages the rear follower 25 under draft, to thereby compress the rear set of the tandem springs.

ln bufiing, the rear shoulders 45 formed at the front end of the -tail-bolt, engage the front 4follower 25 and compress the front set of the tandem springs, the front intermediate follower 26 being prevented from rearward movement by the friction shell 17. At the same time, the spreader formed at the center ofthe tail bolt A wedges the friction shoes outwardly against the internal friction shell, and moves said shoes longitudinally, and said shoes by engaging `the rear intermediate follower 26 thereby compress the rear set of the tandem-arranged springs and in this connection .it will be noted that not only is the movement of the front follower 25 limited by the limiting shoulders 14 on the front stops, but the rear intermediate follower 26 is also limited by the inner shoulders 15 on the rear stops 12.
Under draft, the rear follower 25 is engaged by the collar 39 to compress the rear set of the tanden springs, and the front set of said tandem springs is operated through the front intermediate follower 26 by means of the friction shoes 30, as will be understood from the detailed description of the operation under buff.
l have herein described in detail one form of my invention, but the fo sho is merely illustrative, and l do not Wish to be confined to the exact details shown and described, inasmuch as numerous changes and modifications will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as coming withinthe scope of the claims appended hereto.
1. In a draft rigging, the combination with tandem arranged main springs, of a stationary friction shell intermediate Said springs, friction mechanism coperable with said shell, and means for simultaneously and directly compressingone of said springs and` the other of said .springs indirectly through the friction mechanism, upon either buff or draft.
2. In a draft rigging, the combination with tandem arranged main springs, of a friction mechanism located intermediate said springs, said friction mechanism including shoes and a spreader therefor, and a common member for operating both of said tandem springs and said spreader. si; multaneously under draft and buff.
3. In a draft rigging, the combination with tandem arranged main springs, of a friction mechanism located intermediate said springs, said friction mechanism including friction shoes, and a tail bolt for simultaneously operating said tandem springs, said tail bolt being provided with a wedge to spread said friction shoes under both buff and draft.
4. ln a draft rigging, the combination with tandem arranged springs, of a friction mechanism located intermediatey said springs, said mechanism including a shell, shoes and a spreader therefor, followers for said springs, and meansl for moving said spreader, said shoes engaging one of the followers under buff, and enga-ging another of the followers under draft.
5. In a draft rigging, the combination with tandem arranged springs, front, rear, front intermediate and rear intermediate followers therefor, of a friction mechanism disposed between said intermediate followers, said friction mechanism including longitudinally movable friction shoes, said shoes being arranged to operate said intermediate followers under buff and draft, and stops for 'each of said followers, one intermediate follower remaining stationary un-` der draft and the other intermediate follower under bud.
6. A draft rigging comprising, in combination, a -draw bar, a tail bolt keyed to said draw bar, tandem Iarranged springs, followers-for said springs, a friction mechanism located between the intermediate followers, said tail bolt being adapted to operate the end followers directly, and the intermediate followers indirectly by parts of the friction mechanism.
7. lfn a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of a tail-bolt keyed to said draw bar, said tail bolt having integral wedge faces formed thereon intermediate its ends.
8. ln a railway draft rigging, a tail-bolt comprising two like members, each of which has a main semi-cylindrical portion provided with a shoulder at the front end thereof and an offset forwardly extended slotted si e wing, each of said members being provided with integral oppositely arranged wedgefaces. v
9. A draft rigging comprising, in combination, sills having front and rear stops secured thereto, a friction shell mounted between said sills and held stationarytan dem arranged springs, one on either end of said shell, friction shoes mounted vwithin said shell, a double-acting spreader for said shoes which forces said shoes outwardly under both buff and draft, and front, rear, front intermediate and rear intermediate reageer followers, the intermediate followers being operated by seid shoes.
