Patented July 3, 1917.
Application as October 4, this. Serial Nb. 123,623.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, linear: J; Grimm, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bath-Tub FootRests, of which the following is a specification.
Accidents due to falls caused by slipping in bath tubs are more or less common and in many instances at least these are due as much to liability to properly reach the feet in washing the same as to the carelessness or other faults of the batl'ier. The object of my invention is the provision of a bath tub foot rest adapted to assist the bather in holding the feet, or one foot at a time, in a position for washing the same, irrespective of whether the bather is in a sitting position in the tub, or uses the rim of the tub as a seat when bathing the feet. To this end, in carrying out my invention, 1 provide a foot rest so associated with a bath or foot tub as to be readily accessible as a support for the feet in washing the same.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a bath tub with one form of my improved fixture attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a partial section of the end of .the tub showing the fixture in full lines when in position for use, and in dotted lines in the position it may be caused to assume outside of the tub when not in use.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating a modified form of the invention and Fig. at is also a section elevation, illustrating a further form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, in carrying out my invention, I may provide a foot rest member 10, which may be made of any suitable material and is formed in the shape of the sole of a boot or shoe having a suitable rim in order to form a rest or support for the foot. On the underside adjacent the toe portion, the foot rest is provided with a lug 11 to which one end of a bracket 12 is pivotally connected as indicated at 13. The opposite end of the bracket 12 is pivotally connected to a plate 14 as indicated at 15 and this plate 14: may be permanently attached to the upper face 17 of the tub 18, preferably in a corner thereof, by means of pins 16 or otherwise. Adjacent the heel portion of the foot rest on the under surface of the same, it is provided with a lug 19 adapted to bear against the inner surface of the tub to maintain the foot rest at a proper inclination when in position for use, as indicated in Fig. 2. It will be understood that the bracket 12 may be sufficiently long to permit the foot rest to assume any desired height when in position for use, and when not in use it may be turned up out of the tub to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the foot rest 10 may be so attached to the tub as to be entirely removable therefrom. This may be accomplished by the use of pins 20 either fixed in the foot rest and adapted to be received in openings therefor in the wall of the tub, or fixed in and projecting in a suitable position adjacent the top of the tub and adapted to be received in openings provided for this purpose in the body of the foot rest.
The application of the invention as hereinbefore described, is made to the form of bath tub now most commonly used, in which the walls of the tub inclose the entire space occupied thereby, but it will be apparent that the use of the invention is not limited to this type of bath tub, but is equally applicable to metal tubs having rolled rims.
By reference to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the foot rest 1.0 may be provided with a frame 21 of any suitable material, terminating in a hook 22 adapted to fit over and engage the rim 23 of the bath tub 24: so as to attach and secure the fixture in position for use. In this structure, adjacent the heel portion thereof, the foot rest is further provided with an auxiliary frame 25, made in any suitable form and adapted to bear against the inner surface of the tub to maintain the foot rest at a desired inclination.
In any of the various forms of my invention the device may be used as a soap or brush holder when not in use as a foot rest or support.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bath-tub foot-rest formed in the shape of the sole of a boot or shoe and having a projection from the heel portion thereof, and means for connecting the toe portion of the footrest to the upper portion of a tub, so that in use the said projection bears against the surface of the tub to cause the foot rest, a plate adapted to be secured to the upper surface of the tub, a bracket hinged at one end to the under surface of 15 the foot rest at the toe portion thereof and at the other end in the said plate, and a lug extending from the under surface of the said foot rest adjacent the heel portion thereof and adapted to rest against the tub 2 to lace the foot rest at an inclination.
igned by me this 29th day of Sept. 1916.
