Upon return movement of the pitmen the arms will start to move forward and the restoring bar will advance in the slots 25 and 26. But thisv short movement of therestoring bar will take place at the initial portion of the return movement of the pitmen and levers. Just before the restoring bar reaches the end of these guide slots, ex V tensions nd- 51 on'the arms.23 and 24 respectively will strike stops 52 and 53 on the side plates, that willcause the restoring bar to rock on its axis to swing the rear ends of these arms upward and away from the pins 43 and 28 on the side levers. This will -permit the continued rearward movement of the two levers 29 and 42 -as the pins on the levers will move under the arms, as indicated in Fig. 4; But just 'previous to the release of the arms 23 and 24 from'the lever pins, the pa'wls 39 and 45 .will move to engage the abutments40 and 54 on the arms 23 and 24 respectively,-that will prevent at this stage retraction of the arms and restoring bar by the springs4 37. and 46, as. indicated in Fig. 4. The continued retraction of the pitmenv and levers 29 and 42w1l bring the pins 28 and` 43 thereon into engagement with lugs '55 and 56 on the pawls 39 .and 45 respec- This will tivel and'shiftthe pawls awayfrom the shou der s on these arms; see Figs. 1 and -2. rmit the retraction of the arms and restoring baz-by the springs 37 and 46.

In the arrangement shown this lever 57 also performs auf other function. On the side plate 20 is pivoted a lever 58 whose upper end connects by stud 69 with a suitable frame 1() carrying the numeral pinions 5, by which lever the tuinions are moved to and from the rack bars 6, and to and from the toothed levers. 4. The lever 57 is shown as pivoted on the lever 58, and the forward end of the lever 57 carries a pin 60 arranged to engage abutments 61 and 62 formed'by a slot in the' pitman 30. At the latter part of the fop ward'movement ofthe pitman 30 this pin will strike the abutment 61 and the lever 57 will swing the lever 58 to shift the pinions.
At the latter part of the return of'the pitman 30 abutment 62 will strike the pin 60 and.again shift the lever .58 to return the pinions to.former position. The rear endy 59 of the lever 57 is normally free from-the pin 4S), and does not interfere with the engagement of the arm 23 with the pin 28' on the lever 29. The special keys 1, 2 and 3 engage and depress a swin 'ng lever 63, and the latter carries a bent ever 64 whose `extremity is adjacent a pin 65' on the lever 57. By this means when either of these keysis de ressed the lever 57 is rocked and engages t e pinl.49 on arm 23 to shift the -arms away from. engagement with the pins the levers 29 and 42. -But when a fourth key 66 is depressedthe lever 64 is rockedaway frm the pin 65, and the means formoving the restoring bar is not thereby dis'- abled. This key is the non-print key of the machine, and it is desired to have the' adding mechanism operate as usual, lWhenI 120 such key is depressed.
In order to hold the lever 58 and the frame in the two positions of engagement'v of the numeral inions, I provide s. locking= member in the orm of a leverv 85-havinga tooth 8 6 on its extremity that is pressed upward by 'a spring: 87 to alternately engage notches 88 Aand 89 in the lower end of the lever 58. It will be seen that this tooth 86y has parallel sides with an langular extremity.
