To all 'H2/0m 'may concer/1i p Be it known that/I, Louis Connro'r, a. citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaking Mechanism forFurnace-Grrates7 (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the Republic of France, dated April 241th, 1913, No. 157,110,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eflcient and reliable means for removing;` the elinker, ashes and other material which may deposit upon or adhere to the surface of the grate.
Further said invention has for its object to provide means more particularly adapted for use in connectionwith furnaces having water grates or other forms of lgrates whose bars are Xed and therefore incapable of being' agitated or rocked'inA ordertoremove any clinker, ashes or other matter which may collect upon o i adhere to the grate bars.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a. grato with a shaking` mechanism comprising' a member or series of members movably disposed intermediate the fixed bars forming the grate, and means whereby said movable membersmay be actuated to raise the same above the upper surfaces of said grate barsin order to remove any clinker, ashes or other matter which mayv deposit upon or adhere tothe gratebars and thus interfere with the due passage there through ofthe air necessary to`insure the proper combustion of the fuel. Y Further said invention has for its object to provide a shaking mechanism which may be readily applied to existing` furnaces without necessitating any material change in the construction of the furnace or its grate.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel. details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter very fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the construction' illustrated? at Figs. 1 and 2, 10, 10' designatethe opposite water legs of a boiler section having formed inten grally therewith water grate bars 11, 11. The said bars 11, 11 arek each formed of two parts which extend inwardly toward each other from said opposite legs of the boiler section, and terminate at about the center of the interval between said legs.
The said grate bars 11, 1l. are provilfled upon their opposing` vertical, lonnitudiiuzl sides with laterally-extending projections 12, 12 which register with each other, and at a point intermediate of their ends said bars may be provided with several. somewhat longer registering projections 13, 13 which serve to aid in maintaining the shaking' members, hereinafter described, duly positioned between said bars, and guided in the course of their movements.
Eaclrpair of water grate bars is provided in the upper surfaces of their transversely separated ends withregistering recesses 141;, 111 to receive and support the trunnions 15, 15 of a pivoted shaking member or bar 16, which is substantially co-extensive in length with two bar sections which jointly constiw tute'one grate bar. Each shaking member or bar is somewhat narrower than the space provided between. each pair of grate bars within which space said shakiing` vmember or bar is adapted to work, and is provided at one of itsends Awith a depending arm 17 which extends below the grate bar, and is pivotally connected by means of a pin and slot with an arm 18 fixed upon a shaft 19 arranged below the grate at right angles to the barsland is supported in bearings 20, secured to the boiler sections.
The forward end of the shaft 19 extends through the front of the boiler-,and is designed to receive either a fixed or removable operating handle or lever 21, as shown in dotted lines.
In Iorder to operate the shaking vmechanism it merely becomes necessary to oscillate the operating handle or lever 21, whereby the shaft 19 will be rocked and cause the opposite ends of the shaking members `or bars 16 tobe rocked in unison and assume the positions iiidicatedby broken lines at Fig. 1. Any clinker, ash or other incoinbustible material which may have become deposited upon or adhere to said grate bars or the shaking members therebetween will thus be loosened, and caused to fall-between said bars and into the ash pit below the grate.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4,' 10', 10 designate the opposite water legs of a boiler section having integrally formed water grate bars 11', 11. The said water grate bars 11, 11 ai'e also each foi'medof two parts and terminate at about the center of the space intervening between the said legs. The said 'grate bars 11, 11' are provided upon their opposite sides with laterally extending projections 12', 12 which register with corresponding projections 12', 12 arranged upon the bars of the adjoining boiler sections 10', 10. `Midway between the free and secured ends of said grate bars 11, 11' are provided longer laterally extending projections 13', 13' which extend'beyond the ends of the shorter proj ections 12', 12' which serve to maintain the intermediate shaking members duly positioned therebetween and to guide' 'the Asame vin the course of their movements.

Upon each shaft 19, 19' are provided a series of depending arms 18', 18' having enlarged lower ends 18X, 18X which are adapted to contact with the outer sides of the depending vertical portions 17', 17 of .the shaking members. The arms 18', 18 correspond in number with the number of shak ing members arranged intermediate theV thereof above theplane of said grate bars,
as shown in thedotted lines at Fig. 3, and thus causeany mattei' which' may be depos ited upon or adhere to the grate bars or to said :horizontal members 16', 16i to beloosened and d-rop vbetween -saidf bars into the'V ashpit belowthe grate.
It will be observed thatl the horizontal members-16 of the sha-king members are relatively thin and fit freely between thev adjoining grate bars 11, 11 and that the said horizontal portions of said shaking members 16', 16 are guided in the course of their oscillations by the longer lateral 4projections 13', 13' extending from the opposite sides of the grate bai's 11, 11. j Y

the boiler section lcomprising the legs 10, 10 Y In this construction when the -lever 19au is oscillated the free ends of the horizontal shaking members 16, 16a will be caused to rise alternately above the plane of the upper surfaces of the grate bars 11a, `11a and thus tend to break up and loosen any matter which may be deposited upon or adhere to the said grate bars 11a, 11L or upon the intervening horizontal members 16, 16'ht of the shaking mechanism, and thus cause said matter to drop through said bars and into the ashpit.
In the construction illustrated at Fig. 6 the legs 10", 10b of the boiler section are provided with grate bars 11b, 11b. The shaking mechanism in this construction is composed of a plurality of bell crank levers 16D, 16b which are pivotally secured at the junction of their horizontal and vertical portions to the opposite legs of said boilersections at the junction of the grate bars with said legs of boiler sections.
In this construction, however, the horizontal. members of said bell crank levers 16, 16ZL are equal in length to the two grate bar sections which jointly'constitute one grate bar, and therefore extend entirely across the grate. In this modification the said horizontal members are arranged in overlapping relation; that is to say, between each pair of grate bars 11", 11b each of which is composed of two sections there are arranged two bell crank levers 16a, 16a.
It is to be noted that while my invention is designed more particularly for use in connection. with `Vater gratos, which must of necessity be formed integrally with the boiler sections or be rigidly secured thereto, that the same may nevertheless be employed with equal advantage in combination with other types of rigid grate bars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a grate having a plurality of separated bars with a shaking mechanism comprising a series of bellcrank members pivotally supported between said grate bars, a shaft operatively connected with the vertical portions of said bell-crank members, and means for actuating said shaft whereby to project the ends ofthe horizontal portions of said bell-cranl members upwardly above the horizontal plane of said grate, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a grate having a plurality of separated bars with a shaking mechanism comprising a series of bell-crank members pivotally supported between said grate bars, a shaft supported at right angles to said bell-crank members and operatively connected with the vertical portions of said bell-crank members, and means for actuat ing said shaft whereby to project the ends of the horizontal portions of said bell-crank members upwardly above the horizontal plane of said grate, substantially as speer fied.
8. The combination of a grate having a plurality of separated bars with a shaking mechanism comprising a series of bell-crank members pivotally supported intermediate said grate bars, a shaft supported at right angles to said bell-crank members, means for connecting said shaft with the vertical portions of said bell-crank members, and means for actuating said shaft whereby to project the ends of the horizontal portions of said bell-crank members upwardly above the horizontal plane of said grate, substantially as specified.

The combination of a grate having a plurality of separated bars with a shaln'ng mechanism comprising a series of bell-crank members pivotally supported between said grate bars, a shaft supported at right angles Vto said bell-crank members, means connecting said shaft with the vertical portions of said bell-crank members, means for actuating said shaft whereby to project the ends of the horizontal portions of said bell-crank members upwardly above the horizontal plane of said grate, and means for guiding the free ends of the horizontal portions of said bell-crank members in their movement between said grate bars, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a grate having a plurality of separated bars with a shaking mechanism comprising a series of bellcrank members arranged intermediate each pair of adjacent grate bars and pivotally supported at the center of their horizontal portions, a shaft supported at right angles to said bell-crank members, a series of arms depending from said shaft registering in number with said bell-crank members and pivotally connected to the vertical portions thereof, and an operating lever secured to said shaft, whereby to actuate the same to cause the ends of the horizontal portions of said bell-crank members to be projected upwardly simultaneously between said grate bars and above the upper surface thereof, substantially as specified.
6. The combination with a grate having a plurality of separated bars, cach composed of two sections separated from each other at about the center of the grate and provided with recesses, of a shaking mechanism com prising a series of bell-crank members arranged intermediate each pair of adjacent grate bars, trunnions provided upon said bell-crank members and disposed within the recesses in said grate bars, a shaft supe ported below said grate at right angles to said bell-crank members, a series of arms depending from said shaft registering in number with said bell-crank members and pivotally connected to the ends of the vertealfdepending portions of Said bell-crank Signed at the city of Pars?
