Be it lnown that I, JOSEPH A. COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Oarlines; and I hereby declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in metal carlines suitable. for use in the construction of car-roofs, and pertains more especially to a pressed steel carline suitable for use as one of the transverse members of a car-roof-frame comprising two laterally spaced metal side plates adapted to be braced apart and tied together by carlines embodying my invention. n
One object of this invention is to produce a strong and comparatively inexpensive pressed steel carline which can be readily pressed at one Operation by means of dies from a single oblong steel plate or sheet Of suitable dimensions and applied with facility to the hereinbefore mentioned side plates.
Another object is to produce a carline of the character indicated which not only has a body in the form of a trough adapted to be interposed endwise between said side plates, but has two plate-forming members formed at opposite ends respectively of the carline and integral with the trough-shaped body and arranged to extend under and adapted to be attached to said side plates.
With these. objects in view, and more especially to the end of making the endportions of the carline strong enough to successfully withstand stresses or strains to which a car-roof-frame is generally subjected, this invention consists in such peculiarities in the contour of said portions of the carline as are hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure l is a top plan of a carline embodying my invention, and shows the carline applied to the side plates of a car-roofframe. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken along the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Figs. l andQ are drawn on the same scale. Fig. 3 is a top plan showing a portion of Fig. l on a larger scale than Fig. l. l My improved carline is adapted especially forv use in the construction of a car-roof frame comprising two laterally spaced substantially horizontal and substantially parallel metal side plates each of which preferably consists of a Z-bar arranged with its web or body-portion A substantially horizontal and with its upper liange a arranged at the inner side of the side plate formed by Said bar. It will be observed therefore that each side plate illustrated has a substantially horizontally arranged body-portion A extending' longitudinally of the side plate and a member a which projects upwardly from said body-portion at the inner side and extends longitudinally of the side plate.
The Z-bars or side plates are adapted to be tied together and braced apart by any suitable number of carlines embodying my invention, and are shown as connected together by one of said carlines.
My improved carline comprises two substantially horizontal plate-forming mem bers B arranged at opposite ends respectively of the carline at the bottom of the carline. One of the plate-forming members B is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as overlapping the under side of the body-portion A of one of the side plates, and the Vother of said plateforming members is shown overlapping the under side of the body portion of the other of said side plates. The carline is secured to the side plates as will hereinafter appear.
My improved carline also comprises a body which is in the form of a trough ZJ interposed endwise between the side plates and connected at one end of its bottom to one of the plate-forming members B and connected at the other end of its bottom to the other of Said plate-forming members. The troughshaped body o is preferably arranged higher than and integral with the plate-forming members B, and preferably said plate-forming members are offset downwardly from the bottom of said body, as at l0, (see Fig. 7) so that said bottom is higher than the under sides of the body-portions A of the side plates to which said plate-forming members are attached, and said bottom extends between the upwardly projecting members d of the side plates.
The trough-shaped body b is provided at the top with two laterally and outwardly projecting flanges 12 arranged at opposite sides respectively and extending longitudinally and preferably from end to end of said body.
At each end of the trough-shaped body are formed two upright abutment-members 13 forthe inner side of the upwardly proj ecting member a of the side plate, the under side of which is adapted to be .overlapped by the plate-forming member B adjacent said end of said trough-shaped body, and said abutment-members extend laterally of and outwardly from opposite sides respectively of and ,are integral with said body and are attached to said member of said side plate as will hereinafter appear. Preferably each plate-forming member Bof each end-portion of the carline extends laterally of and outwardly from the adjacent side of the trough-shaped body I) as far as the flange 12 of said side of said body projects and is bent downwardly at its side edges, as at 14, and said plate-forming member is shown riveted, as at 15, between its downwardly projecting members 14: to the body-portion A of the adjacent side plate.
Each abutment-member 13 connects the adjacent flange 12 of the trough-shaped body b with the adjacent plate-forming member B and has an inwardly bent p-ortion 1,6 extending and forming a connection between the adjacent downwardly bent portion 1l of said plate-forming member' and said flange, and said inwardly projecting portion 16 of said abutment-member and the contiguous downwardly projecting portion 1d of said plate-forming member form a reinforcing web which connects said plateforming member with said flange, and said web has its upper end-portion enlarged, as at 17, longitudinally of said flange.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the trough-shaped body b of the plate-forming members B and the abutment-members 13 are integral, and the webs formed by the reinforcing portions 15, 16 and 17 of the end-portions of the lcarline render said end-portions adequately strong and efficient in bracing apart and tying together the side plates, and I would here remark that Ieach abutment-member 13 is preferably riveted, as at 18, intermediately of its Iinwardly projecting portion 16 and the adjacent side of the trough-shaped body to the upwardly projecting member a; of the adjacent side plate.
-What I claim is Y 1. In a metal carline, two substantially horizontal plate-forming members arranged at opposite ends respectively of the carline at the bottom of the carline and adapted to extend under and be secured to the side plates of a car-roof-frame, a body which is in the form of a trough andconnected at one end to one of said plate-forming members and at its other end to the other of said plate-forming members, said trough-shaped Vbody being integral with said plate-forintegral with said'body, each plate-formingV member extending laterally of and outwardly from each side ofsaid body, and the abutment-forming members connecting the aforesaid flanges with the plate-forming members and being integral with said plateforming members.
2. In a metal carline, two substantially horizontal plate-forming members arranged at opposite ends respectively of the carline and adapted to extend under and be secured to the side plates of a car-roof-frame, Va body which is in the form of a trough and connected at one end to one of said plate-forming members and at its other end to the other of said plate-forming members, and abutment-members at `the ends of said body for the inner sides of the aforesaid side plates, said abutment-members being arranged at the sides of and integral with said body, each plate-forming member extending laterally of and outwardly from each side of said body and being bent downwardly at its side edges, each abutment-forming member connecting and being integralv with the adjacent plate-forming member, and said body being integral with and arranged higher than the plate-forming members.
In a metal carline, horizontal plate-forming members arranged at opposite ends respectively of the carline at the bottom of the carline and adapted to extend under and be securedV to the side plates of a car-roof-frame, a body which is in the form of a trough and connected at one end to one of said plate-forming members and at its other end t-o the other of said plate-forming members, and abutment-members at the ends of said body for the inner sides of the aforesaid side plates, said abutment-members being arranged at the sides of and integral with said body, each plateformingmember extending laterally of and outwardly from each side of said body, and being'bent downwardly at its side edges, and each abutment-forming member having an inwardly projecting portion connecting with the adjacent downwardly bent portion of said ,plate-forming member.

5. The combination, with two laterally spaced side plates of a car-roof-frame, of a metal carline comprising two substan tially horizontal plateforming members which extend under and are secured to the side plates, which carline has a bodyI in the form of a trough extending between said plate-forming members of the carline and is provided with two abutment-members for each side plate, said abutment-members being arranged at opposite sides respectively oit' the trough-shaped body of the carline and at the inner side of and secured to the adjacent side plate, each abutment-member connecting with said trough-shaped body and with the adjacent plate-forming member of the carline, and each plate-forming member of the carline connecting with and odset downwardly from the adjacent end of the bottom of said trough-shaped body.
6. The combination, with two laterally spaced metal side plates of a car-roof-frame, each side plate having a substantially horizontally arranged body-portion extending longitudinally of the side plate and a member projecting upwardly from and extending longitudinally of said body-portion, oit a metal carline comprising two substantially horizontal plate-forming members which extend under and are secured to the body-portions of the side plates, which carline has a body in the form of a trough extending between said plate-forming members of the carline and is provided with abutment-members for the side plates, said abutment-members being arranged opposite the inner sides of and secured to the up .wardly projecting members of the side plates, and the body-portions of the side the carline and is provided with two abutment-members for each side plate, said abutment-members being arranged at opposite sides respectively of said troughshaped body of the carline and at the inner side of said side plate, each plate-forming member of the carline being bent downwardly at its side edges, and each abutment-member hav ing an inwardly bent portion connecting with the adjacent downwardly bent portion of the adjacent plateeforming member of the carline and secured to the adjacent side plate between its inwardly bent portion and the aforesaid trough-shaped body'.
8. The combination, with two laterally spaced side plates of a carroof-frame, of a metal carline comprising two substantially horizontal plate-forming members arranged at opposite ends respectively of the carline and extending under the side plates, which carline has a body in the form of a trough extending between and connected to said plate-forming members of the carline and is provided with two abutment-members :for each side plate, said abutment members being arranged at opposite sides rcspectively of the trough-shaped body of the carline and at the inner side of and secured to said side plate, each plate-forming member of the carline being bent downwardly at its side edges, each abutment-member having an inwardly bent portion connecting with the adjacent downwardly bent portion of the adjacent plate-forming member of the carline, and each plate-forming member of the carline being secured to the adjacent side plate between the downwardly bent portions of said plate-forming` member.
9. The` combination, with two laterally spaced metal side plates of: a cauroottramc, each side plate having a substantially horizontally arranged bodyportion extending longitudinally of the side plate and a longi tudinallyI extending upwardly projecting member at the inner side of the side plate, of a metal carline comprising two plateforming members extending under the bodyportions of the side plates, which carline has a body extending lbetween and connected to said plate-forming members of the carn line and is provided at each end of said body with two abutment-members for the adjacent upwardly projecting member of the side plate, said abiltment-members being arranged at opposite sides respectively of said body of the earline, eaeli plate-forming member of the earline being bent downwardly at its side edges and riveted to the body-portion of the adjacent side plate 'between the downwardly bent portions of said plate-forming` member, and eaeli abutmentmember having an inwardly bent portion connecting with the adjacent downwardly bent portion of the adjacent plate-forming member of the earline and riveted to the upwardly projecting member o the adjacent side plate between its inwardly bent f witnesses.
