Improvement in Braiding Attachment for Sewing Machines.
No. 123,167. Patentedlan.30,1872.
UNITED STATEs PATENT @FFICE.
HARRY O. GOODRIOH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAIDING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,167, dated January 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, HARRY O. GooDRIon, of the city of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a front View; Fig. 2, a side View 5 Fig. 3, a plan View; and Fig. 4, a transverse vertical section of the foot. The drawing is full size.
My invention relates to that class of braiding attachments which are attached to the presser-foot bar in the place of the presserfoot proper; and consists in so constructing the attachment that there will be an open space around the shank, and in making the same adjustable to bra-ids of different widths.
In the drawing, a represent-s the collar, by means of which the device is attached to the presser-foot bar. I) b are curved arms, secured to the collar, the lower ends of which, 0 c, are flattened and brought near to each other, leaving a small space between them, as represented. The partsc 0 take the place of the foot of an ordinary presser-foot when this attachment is in use. Two small bars or rods, 01 and i, are placed in the space between 0 c. I provide d with a screw-thread, fittinga corresponding female screw in c. This construction enables me to enlarge or diminish the space between 0 c, adapting the device to braids of .,different widths, the bars b b being of such size that they can be sprung apart or drawn together by the screw d. d and i might be permanently secured to 0 a, but the attachment would not then be adjustable.
The device is so.constructed that when it is attached to the machine the needle will pass down just behind the bar 3, as shown in Fig. 4, and the foot 0 0 or part thereof will be over the feed of the machine.
In use, the cloth upon which the braid is to be sewed is placed upon the bed of the machine in the usual manner, and under the foot 0 0, while the braid is passed over the bar at, and under the bar 'i, and after the first stitch has been taken, the cloth and braid will be carried along together by the feed.
The construction of this device enables the operator to see the work as soon as it leaves the needle, while the pattern will be also in view until it reaches the needle, and will not be hidden by the foot.
One of the bars I) might be omitted, but I prefer the construction shown.
What I claim as new is as follows:
The braiding attachment, herein described, consisting of a bent or curved arm, open foot and intermediate rod, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes speci fied.
HARRY G. GOODRIOH.
