This invention relates to swimming appliances and has for its object to provide an appliance of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for maintaining the swimmer afloat at the same time assisting in increasing the impulse obtained from the strokes of the arms and limbs over natural conditions.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a swimming appliance which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eticient and convenient in its use, readily mounted in position upon the body of the swimmer and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is found an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

The pairs of openings 8, 9 are employed for the passage of flexible elements 10, 11 for the purpose of securing the paddle tothe arm of the wearer.

Adaptedto Vbe positioned against the shin of each limb n3as well as overlapping the foot, is a limb paddle consistin of a body 12 of flat buoyant material having the -forward end thereof rounded as at 13 and the of the seating of the body 12 against the instep and so that said body will overlap the foot as illustrated in Fig. 1. Each of the side edges of the body 12is of slight conveXo-concave curvature as at 15, and said body l12 increases in width from its forward end to a point beyond the transverse center thereof and then gradually decreases in width from said point toward the rear end of the body.

rllhe'forward end of the body 12 is formed near each edge 15 with a pair of openings 16 and said body 12 near its rear end, near each edge 15, has a pair of'openings '17. The pair of openings 16 oppose each other and the pairs of openings 17 @oppose each other. rlhe Yopenings 16 are provided for the passage of a iiexible member 18, and the openings 1'1 are provided for the passage of a flexible member 19. The members 18, 19, are employed for securing the body 12 to the limb of the swimmer. f

Adapted to be secured against the chest of the swimmer is a fiat oval-shape buoyant member -20 having openings 21 for the passage of a HeXible member 22 and further having openings 23 for the passage of a flexible member 24. The said'iem'ble members 22, 23, are' employed for securing the buoyant member 20 to the body of the swimmer.

The iat paddles increase the impulse derived from the stroke of the arms and limbs over the impulse obtained under natural conditions which is when the appliance is not used.

The buoyant member 20 is of great assistance in maintaining the body afloat when an appliance is used by a person just learning to swim. The body is also assisted to iioat by the paddles as they are also made of buoyant material.
