Description

CAR SEAL.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJS. 1914.
Patented June 26, 1917.v
FREDERICK STRAHM, OF LA,WREli'lCE, KANSAS.
`cnn-SEAL;
[b all whom-t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK STRAHM,
V a citizen of the lnited States, residing at Lawrence, inthe county of Douglas, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seals; and I do hereby declare the .following to -be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the y same.
This invention relates to improvements in car seals.
The principal object ofthe invention is to provide a simple device of. this character which can be locked without the use of any press.
Another Objectis to provide a device of this character which can be quickly and easily broken when it is desired to openthe (-ar without the necessity for special tools for unlocking the seal. 4
Uther objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when 'taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1l is a side elevation of the complete seal in locked position. v
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional viewtherethrough.
Fig. 3 is a plan View.
F ig. 4 is a perspective View of the strap or ribbon of the seal.
Referring now more -particularly `to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents asubstantialiy fiat housing closed at one end and open at the other, the material at 10 in oppositc faces of the housing being depressed as shown to provide opposed inward projectionsl the purpose of which will appear.
A ribbon or strap 11 of suitable metal has one of its ends foi-ined with a struck up lug or tongue 12 inclining laterally and .for
vwai-diy from one face thereof.
The extremity of this-portion of the rib,- bon is folded over into four thicknesses as indicated at 11 and is'inserted` into the housing 10, where it is frictionally held between the projections above described against removal from the housing.- -The ribbon is fui-ther formed'inwardly of the flded por- Specication of Let-ters Patent.

Application filed August 5, 1914. Serial N o. 855,262.
tions 11 with a plurality of folds'11 providing three thicknesses o f material for a purpose that will subsequently be apparent.
vThe other end of the ribbon is formed with desired to employ the seal, the free end of the ribbon is passed through the staple cominonly p rovided on freight car doors and 1s theninserted into the open end of the housing 10 between a side wall thereof and the folded portion 11'." of the ribbon, the tongue 12 passing through the opening 14 and thereby securing said free end against withdrawal. .On each edge of the ribbon at points outwardly of the open end of the housing are formed the notches 15, these notches being adapted for weakening these portions of the ribbon so that the saine can be readily broken when the seal is to be removed from the lock. The housing and the endsof the ribbon will thus be broken away from the ribbon and obviates the dangerv of the ends of the ribbon breaking within the housing.
What is'claimed is:
A car seal comprising a housing having a closed and an open end, inward projections formed on opposed faces of the housing adjacent its closed end, a ribbon of metal intermediatelyiooped and having one of its ends bent to 'provide a plurality of thicknesses. of material inserted within the housing and frictionally held between the projections against removal therefrom, a portion of said end LWithin the housing havling a tongue struck-.outwardly therefrom, and said end inward y'of the tongue being further bent to provide a plurality of thicknesses of material partially closing the open end of the housing, and the other end of the ribbon being provided with an opening and being insertible in the housing to lookingly engage'the tongue within the opening.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
