To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VVILmn LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benson, in the county of Johnston, State of skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vehicle jacks and has special reference to an automobile jack.
One important object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of improved construction wherein the elevating of the vehicle will be accomplished or assisted in accomplishment by its movement longitudinally over the jack.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of jack wherein certain resilient links used in accomplishing the elevating movement will be caused, by their resiliency, to effectually lock the jack in elevated position against accidental dropping.
A fourth important object of the invention is the provision of a noveland simple means for journaling certain links therein.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed. 7

In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there has been disclosed a lower or base frame which consists of a pair of at each end an opening 13.
longitudinally extending members 10 each of which is provided at each end with a journal notch 11 extending downward from its upper face. arranged lifting rails 12 each of which has Shafts 14v. are seated in the notches 11 and are held in position in said notches by cross braces or transverse members 15 secured to the members 10 and covering said notches. At each end of each shaft there is provided a pair of arms 16 constituting links for connecting the members 10 and rails 12, the upper ends of these arms being bent at right angles to enter the opening 13. The links at the end of the device which is first approached by the automobile, preferably termed the front end Above these members 10 are for purposes of convenience are resilient I and, when the lifting rails are raised these resilient links contact with stops 17 firmly fixed to the members 10.
At one side of the device, rear end thereof there is provided in the member 10 a bearing 18 and secured to this member by arms 19 1s an outboard bearing 20. In the bearings 18 and 520 is journaleda shaft 21 having on one end an operating lever 22 and on the other end a crank 23 which is connected by a pitman 24: with the angularly bent upper end of one of the arms or links 16 at the rear end of the device. The length or throw of the crank is such that prior to its movement past its dead center the links 16 at the front end will be brought into engagement with the stops 17. By reason of the resiliency of these links the crank may be moved past its dead center whereupon the tendency of the resilient links to straighten will throw it off center. I11 order to limit this movement 01f center the lower frame is provided with diagonal braces 25 against one of which the pit man 24 strikes after the crank has been thrown across its dead center. WVhen in raised position the front end links will thus, by their resiliency. prevent accidental throwing of the crank back past its dead center to drop the device, the lowering movement being only capable of accomplishment by proper actuation of the operating lever. In this manner injury to the automobile or to those working around it by its accidental dropping is prevented.
In, order to cause the automobile to assist adjacent the in the raising operation upwardly and forwardly extending stops 26 are fixed to the upper faces of the lifting rails 12 at their rear ends. Bearing members 27 are similarly fixed to the front ends of these rails.
In operation, as the automobile is run into position for lifting, usually forward, one of its axles will engage the stop 26 and swing the links so that the rails 12 will lift the machine. The inertia of movement will usually be suflicient to carry the crank beyond its dead center against the resiliency of the front link 16. However, if this inertia is not suflicient the operating lever may be grasped and swung over to complete the lifting operation.
It is obvious that by reversing the movement of the operating lever the rails will be dropped and the automobile may move away from the jack.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to'the exact form herein shown and described. but

The combination with a lower rectangular frame; of a pair of lifting rails located above the frame at respective sides thereof, a pair of resilient links connecting the frame at one end thereof with corresponding ends of the rails, a second pair of links connecting the remaining ends of the rails and frame, stops fixed to the frame in the path of the firstmentioned links, a rock shaft journaled on the frame and provided with an operating lever at one end and a crank at the other. a pitinan connecting said crank and one of the second-mentioned links, said crank having a sul'liciently great throw to bend the resilient link on the same side of the frame as the crank passes over its dead center in raising the rails, said frame including brace members one of which acts as a stop for the pitman, and stops on the rails arranged for engagement by the axle of a vehicle as the latter is run over the frame longitudinally.
