CIRCUIT-COMPLETING PLUG FDR LAMP-SOCKETS.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,041.
To all whom/t may conce/m:
Be it known that I, JAMES LEONARD CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Barryton, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Circuit-Completing Plug for LampSockets, orl which I the following is a full, clear, and exact deetlicien't in use, and so designed that it can readily replace a defective lamp, in a' series wired electrical system, to thereby permit the use of a part of the system until replacement can be made of the defective lamp, thus enabling an automobilist to travel with one or more lamps burning until the point is reached where replacement or the defective lamp can be made, the attachment being in the nature of a plug having suitably arranged Contact or contacts so as to complete 'the circuit when inserted in a lamp socket.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particulari'ty in the following description and claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates certain embodiments of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure l is a diagrammatic View of a lightlng system with the plug inserted in one of the lamp sockets to Complete the cir-4 cuit; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the sockets with the plug in position.
Referring to the drawing,A and A designatelamp sockets in the lighting circuit B, and in one of the sockets is a circuit-completing plug or attachment C, while in the other is a lamp D. The attachment C is a plug, the body of which is made oi' insulating material and has extending from one end a central contact 2 which is held in place by rbeing anchored in the insulation 1. Projecting from opposite sides of the body l are pin-like members L which are insulated from 'the contact 2, and these members 4 are adapted to engage in bayonet slots 5 in the shells of the sockets A and A. In the sockets are contacts 7 and 8 which are adapted to engage the terminals 9 and 10 or' the lamps. When a lamp burns out the attacl1r ;ent C is inserted in the socket and the contact 2 thereof engages both contacts 7. and 8, so that the lighting circuit will be completed with only one lamp in service,
Having thus described my invention., I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The' combination of a lighting circuit including a plurality of lampsockets having a plurality of contacts therein and having bayonet slots in the walls of the socket, with a circuit-closing plug comprising a body of insulation, a bridging contact anchored therein for engaging the contacts on the lamp socket for electrically connecting them, and pins anchored in the body of insulation and separated from the said contact therein, said pins being engageable in the bayonet slots to hold the contact of the plug in engagement with the contacts of the socket.
JAMES LQENARD CAMPBELL.
