which the following is a specification.

This inventionrelates to buttons ofthe socalled lever ihead type,land-has for its ob- .ject to provide a button of this class adapted ,to beusedas, a collarv button or f rany other use for which it may be .tdapted, the same being provided with; a post having a member ,pivotally mounted thereon and a head pivotally connected {130 said @member, whereby both. the head and-member may be'swungup in line with ;the post-when:deSiredtofacilitate .its being passed through the buttonhole.

A further object of the invention is toprovide meanswhereby the hea'd may be locked to the post when in contracted position.

lVith these and. other objectsiinNiew, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction,, -as will be :more. fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the post of the button which is preferably drawn up into tubular form, from a flat plate 11 onto which plate is preferably rolled the usual gold front 12, thereby forming the fixed head of the. button. The opposite end of this post has its sides pressed inwardly as at 13, see Fig. 5, forming a flat portion which is pierced at 14, and through which the hinge pintle 15 is passed. The

outer end of this post is shown as being provided witha ball 15 whichprovi'desa lock for the swinging head, presently described.

The primary object of this in'ventionisto provide a head 011.17118'b11tt011 which instead of being fixed rigidly'to the post as is the tease with some buttons, may be extended'in 'line with thepost, wherebyit is adapted'to be more readily passed through the buttonilioles of starched go0ds such as cuffs, collars jand the;like, andalso to be used in soft cuffs when desired. The'free end of this plate is provided with anotherhinge eye member 18 and -to this hinge eyemember is connected the backing plate 19 of'the swinginghead 20.

'One end of this backing. platefis provided 7 with extending portionsfol'ded over to provide a pairgffeyes-Zl which straddles the eye 18 in the hinge plate and through both of whichis passed a pivotpin22.

,In Order to secure this back plate to the post when not in folded position, I have punched a hole 23 in this plate and have raised the stock around the edge of the hole and have also split this stock at the points 24: so that when the plate is swung at right angles to the axis of the post the ball 16 may be forced through this opening 23 and the resilient lips of the stock around the opening will grip the ball and securely bind the plate thereto.

Any style of ornamented front plate 25 may be attached to this back plate 19 and I have shown them connected by rolling the edges of one over those of the other.

A button of my improved construction has many advantages over the usual lever type of button among others being; First, when the head is extended in line with the post as illustrated in Fig. 2, it may be readily passed through the button holes of a stifliy starched collar or cuff and that without enlarging the button-holes which is not the case where a large ball or bean end is used or when a head of the flat rigid type is employed; second, a button of my improved type may have both heads large enou h to absolutely prevent any possibility of eing drawn through the unstarched button-holes of a soft cuff; third, the extendible head may serve the purpose of a lever to draw toe and its free end is adapted to enter a notch V gether the ends of a collar, upon being passed through thebuttomholes thereof.

1. A button comprising a post, a member hinged to said post, and a head hinged to said member whereby said head and member may be extended in line with the post.
