ANGELO ROBERT CLAS, 0F SHEBOYGAN FALLS, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO FALLS MACHINE COMPANY, OF SHEBOYGAN WISCONSIN.
FALLS, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF GLUE-JOINTER ADJUSTMENT.
Application filed June 26, 1
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, ANGELO ROBERT CLAs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboygan and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glue-Jointer Adjustments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. v
This invention has for its object to provide a continuous feed glue jointer with side bars capable of independent adjustment at either end thereof but also adapted for simultaneous adjustment at both ends of both side bars bya single adjusting means.
Heretofore-the side bars of continuous feed glue j ointers have had adjusting screws at each end thereof and a-change of adjustment of the machine, as when changing from work of one thickness to work of a different thickness required the changing of the four adjusting screws to the same extent.
An object of the present invention is to embody a single adjusting means in the bed of the machine for simultaneously operating all four adjusting screws, thus assuring equal adjustment throughout with a saving in time required for the adjustment- With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the glue jointer ad justment as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
eate the same parts in the different views:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a glue jointer adjustment constructed in accordance with this invention, the outline of the continuous feed glue j ointer being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 4 is an end view on an enlarged seal with parts broken away;
Fig. 5 is a plan view on an enlarged scale with the side bar lugs sectioned; and,
Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the helical gear yokes.
In these drawings 9 indicates the bed or frame of a continuous feed glue jointer on which is mounted the central endless feed chain 10 as usual. The upper edges of the bed form parallel work supports 11 on which the turning of the hand wheel in one direc- 11o Specification of Letters Patent.

this'purpose. Cross shafts 14 are j ournaled 1n bearings in the sides of the frame 9 with their ends projecting beyond the latter and having screw sleeves 15 held thereon by ,means of removable screw pins 16 passing diametrically through them. Side bar sup- :porting brackets 17 form housings inclosing these projecting ends of the cross shafts,
and the side bars 12 at each end slide thereon and have downwardly projecting lugs 18 through which the screw sleeves 15 are threaded. Fixed at the center of each cross shaft 14 is a helical gear 19 confined between yoke arms'of a bearing bracket 20. The
One end of oneof the cross shafts 14 extends through the end of the side bar supporting bracket 17 and has a hand wheel or crank handle 25 thereon by which it maybe lturned.
In operation the turning of the cross ,shaft 14 by means of the hand wheel 25 not only sets in motion the screw sleeves 15 ithereon, but also through the longitudinal shaft 23 and the helical gear connections causes the other cross shaft 14 to turn and impart movement to the other two screw sleeves. The direction of the threads of the screw sleeves as well as the direction of the oblique teeth of the helical gears causes all four screw sleeves to produce a like effect,
turned.
tion serving to move both ends of both side bars inwardly toward the feed chains, while the turning of the hand wheel in the opposite direction produces the opposite result. Should independent adjustment be desired it may be accomplished by removing oneof the screw pins 16 so as to free the screw sleeve from the cross shaft 14:, and then by turning the screw sleeve independently, as by means of a spanner wrench, the adjustment may be made and the screwpin relhus one of the side bars may have one end set nearer to or farther from the feed chain without afl'ecting.the others.
What I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a glue jointer, a central feedm means, side bars on opposite sides thereof, and a screw adjusting means having threaded engagement with both ends of both -..$1de bars for moving them, simultaneously toward or away from the feeding means, Said side bars forming with the feeding ,means work clamping guides of equal widths in the Various adjustments.
2. In aglue j ointer, a central endless feed chain, a side bar on either side thereof containing spring pressed rollers for holding work against the feed chain,and an adjusting means-having threadedengagement with both ends of both side bars for movingthem simultaneously toward or away from the feed chain to form equally variable work feeding clamping guides between them.
3. In a glue jointer, a central feeding means, side bars on opposite sides thereof having bearing means for engaging work and holding it against the feeding ,means, cross shafts having threaded engagement with the ends of the two sidebars, a longitudinal shaft having helical ,gear 601K160- tions with the cross shafts, and means for turning one of the shafts for producing simultaneous adjustment of the side bars toward or away from the feeding means .to form equally varying work clamping feed guides between them.
at. In a glue jointer, a central feeding means, side bars on opposite sides thereof having bearing means for engaging work and holding it against the feeding means, cross shafts, screw sleeves on ithe cross shafts detachably connected therewith and threaded in the side bars, ,a longitudinal shaft having helical gear connections with the cross shafts, and means for turning one of the shafts for producing simultaneous adjustment ofthe side bars toward .or away from the feeding means for equally varying the width of the work feeding clamping guides between the side bars and the feeding means.
5. In a glue jointer, a frame, a central feeding means thereon, side bars on opposite sides of the feeding means having bearing means for engaging work and holding it against-the feeding means, cross shafts journaled in the frame and having threaded engagement with the ends of the side bars, .yokc brackets adjustably mounted on the frame and having yoked bearings for the cross shafts, a longitudinal shaft journaled --l-I1 the brackets, helical gears on the cross shafts and-on the longitudinal shaft meshing with each other and confined between yokes of the brackets, and means for turning one of the shafts for producing simultaneous adjustment of both ends of both side bars.
6. In a glue jointer, a frame, a central endless feed chainthereon, cross shafts journaled in the frame with their ends projecting'beyond the sides of the frame, supporting brackets secured to the sides of the frame and forming housings inclosing the projecting ends ofthe crossshafts, side bars slidablymounted on the supporting brackets and {having bearing means for engaging .work and holding it against the feed chain, screw sleeves fitting on the projecting ends of the cross shafts, screw ,pins removably securing the screw sleeves to the cross shafts, lugs on the sidebars passing through openings of the supporting'brackets and threaded on the screw sleeves, yoke brackets adjusta'bly secured .to the frame and having yoke arms in which the cross shafts are mounted, .Qhelical gears -on the cross shafts between the yoke arms, a longitudinal shaft journaled in the yoke brackets, helical gears thereon meshing with the first mentioned helical gears and confined between yoke arms of the yoke brackets, and a crank handle secured to one of the cross shafts.
