IMPROVEMENT IN BED-SPRINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,036, dated January 23, 1872.

To all whom it may conce-rn:

Be it known that I, PHILo G. MoREHoUs, of Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bed-Spring, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawing making a part of this specitication and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon. v

This invention has relation to spring-beds having wooden slats to support the mattress; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of elastic slats, which pass through notches in the lower edges of blocks upon which the main slots rest, and which,

Y having their inner edges cut obliquely, extend diagonally from their resting places upward to a diagonal brace reaching from one to the other of said blocks, and are spliced to said brace by means of strong rubber bands.

Referring to the drawing, A represents the frame of a bedstead, having attached to the inner sides of the ends the strips B, notched in their upper edges to receive the ends of the elastic slats. C designates the main slats, secured near each end to blocks D. The slats are attached to these blocks in pairs. Between each pair of slats a space is left, as shown. E designates a brace extending diagonally from one block to the other, its ends resting in notches in said blocks. For strengthening purposes this brace may be made with an en larged middle part. In the lower edge of each block a notch is formed for the reception of a spring slat, F. The outer ends of said slats rest in the notches b. The inner edges of these slats are cut in an oblique or diagonal direction, so that when two slats are brought together they shall be as one slat. These slats extend from their resting places, in an upward oblique manner, toward the blocks, as shown. The small ends ofthe slats F touch the brace E near the blocks D, and are held thereto by means of India-rubber bands G. When any pressure is brought to bear on the bed, the greatest strain occurs near or at the outer ends of the spring slats, causing the slats to tend toward a horizontal position to bands Gr, giving according to the pressure on the slats. The bands G serve to bring the slats back to their original position when the pressure is relieved. H indicates pins passed through the slats F, and designed to prevent them from throwing the brace E out of place.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl. The combination of the horizontal slats C, blocks D, diagonal brace E, inclined spring slats F, and elastic bands G, substantially as specified.

2. The inclined slats F, resting on the bars B, and having the inner edges cut in the diag onal manner shown and described, in combination with the brace E and bands G, substantially as specified.
