Be it known that I, JOHN H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to that type of lock in which a latch bolt is adapted to be retracted from the outside of the door by a knob, and by suitable key mechanism, and from the inside of the door by a knob, there being suitable stop work or night latch mechanism associated with the outside knob, whereby it may be prevented from turning. My inprovements are herein shown and described as applied to a union or escutcheon look, but it will be manifest from the following description that the invention is applicable to looks of other kinds.
The primary object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the operation of the stop work or nightlatch mechanism, which is usually accessible at the face or front of the look. It is intended to furnish a lock wherein it is impossible to throw o-fl' the stop work or night latch mechanism, by means of an instrument inserted between the look front and the strike plate, andin which the stop work may only be thrown off, or rendered inoperative, by a person familiar with my improved con struction. More particularly, it is aimed to provide means to permit the throwing ofl of the stop work only when the inside knob is actuated in a particular manner. Furthermore, it is'aimed to provide a lock wherein the stop work or night latch mechanism, which cooperates in the usual way with the outside hub of the latch retracting mechanism, is directly controlled by another hub of the latch retracting mechanism. An other important feature resides in the construction by which the last named hub, after having been turned from its normal position to release the stop work, and after the release of the outside hub, can return to its normal. position without displacing the member for clogging the outside hub.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown my improvements applied to a union lock having an outside escutcheon 20, a face plate 21, a pivoted latch bolt 22 projecting through the face plate, and a yoke 23 for retracting the latch bolt. The yoke 23 is adapted to be actuated by any of three hubs or rollbacks 241, 25 and 26. The hub 26 is suitably connected to the shank or spindle 27 of anoutside knob 28. The middle hub or rollback 25 is attached to a rod 29 forming part of a pin tumbler lock mechanism 30, housed in the knob 28, and adapted to be operated by a suitable key 31. The rollback 24 is connected with the shank or spindle 32 of an inside knob 33, connected with the inside escutcheon 34; of the look, as shown in Fig. 3.
The outside hub 26 is adapted to be dogged by a dogging slide 35 having a button or plunger head 36, accessible at the face plate of the lock. .The slide 35 in the form shown has an upright arm 37, provided with a notch 38, adapted to take over a lug 39 on the outside hub 26, and thereby. fix said hub against movement. The slide or stop member 35 forms part of a night latch mechanism associated with the outer 7 beam, the pushing in of one slide will result in the outward movement of the other, as usual in this class of devices.
In the lock illustrated, the releasing slide 40 ofthe night latch mechanism cooperates in a novel manner with the inside hub 24,
'whereby the position assumed by said hub controls the operation of the night latch mechanism from the face of the lock; To
this end, the releasing slide 40 is provided with an extei'ision46, having an upstanding lug 47, arranged in front and about centrally of the inside hub 24, as shown in Fig. 5. The inside hub, on the other hand,-
has a forwardly projecting nose or lug 48 which, in the normal position of the hub, lies back of the lug '47, in such close proximity thereto as to prevent the slide 40 from being pushed inward. Hence, when the inside hub is in its normal position and the slide 35 ofthe stop work is in dogging position relative to the outside hub 26, the releasing slide 40 will be blocked by the lug or nose 48 against such a complete actuation as is necessary to release the dogging slide. When, however, the inside hub is partially turned by the inside knob 33, as shown in Fig. 7, the lug or nose 48 will be moved out of the path of the lug 47 on the releasing slide to such an extent as to permit a complete movement of said slide to release the outside hub, as shown in Fig. 7 The intermediate hub or rollback 25 not being provided with a blocking device for the releasing slide has no cooperation with the stop work, and-hence the control of the stop work is confined to the inside knob. However in the broad aspects of the invention, I do not limit myself to a construction in which a work in a direct manner, is operated by the inside knob, as distinguished from some other operating instrumentality. In the construction shown, the movement of the inside hub 24 into non-blocking position relative to the releasing member [of the stop work is only a slight movement which does not necessitate acomplete retraction of the latch. The stop work may therefore be released for manualmanipulation in a very easy manner by one conversant with the lock construction. Moreover, the embodiment herein shown and described is so construct ed that after the hub has been'turned out of its normal position to permit the release of the dogging member for the outside hub, the inside hub may return readily to its normal position. To this end, the connection of the releasing slide 40 with the walking beam 42 is a so-called one-way connection, constituted by a notch 45 in the walking beam, taking over the pin 45 on the slide, and permitting an outward movement of the slide without a corresponding movement of the walking beam. Hence, when the hub 24 has been turned to non-blocking position relatively to the stop work, and the dogging slide has been released, as shown in full lines in Fig. 7, the hub 24 may swing back to its normal position under the influence of the spring controlled yoke 28,.
When the dogging member of the stop work has been moved into its inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 7 it may be readily rengaged with the outside hub merely by pushing said dogging member inward. In this operation the walking beam 42 will be swung on its pivot into a position in which the notch 45 engages the pin 45 of the releasing slide, as shown in Fig. 6. When inits off position the stop work mechanism can always be actuated manually to dog the outer latch retracting device, but it can only be actuated to release such outer retracting device when a rotary member, such as a hub, normally blocking the movement of the releasing member of the stop work, is turned outv of its blocking position.
Various modifications in the construction may be adopted within the scope of the in vention as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a look, a latch bolt, inner and outer manual retracting devices therefor, manually-movable stop work for the outer retracting device, key mechanism for'retracting the'latch bolt, and means for normally preventing a releasing movement of said stop work, and for preventing such releasing movement when the key'mechanism is operated, said preventing'means being movable into an inoperative position when said inner manual retracting device is operated; substantially as described.
2. In a look, a latch bolt, inner and outer knobs for retracting the same, manually movable stop work associated with the outer knob, key mechanism for. retracting the latch bolt, and means releasable by the inner knob only for blocking the movement of the stop work from operative into inoperative position; substantially as described.
3. In a lock, a latch bolt, inner and outer manual retracting devices therefor, manually operable stop Work accessible at the face of the lock for dogging the outer r'etracting device, key mechanism for retracting the latch bolt, means to lock said stop work against a releasing movement, and means operated by the inner retracting device, but unaffected by said key mechanism, to shift the locking mechanism for the stop Work to an inoperative position; substantially as described.
4. In a lock, a latch bolt, inner and outer manual retracting devices therefor, manually operable stop work associated with the outer retracting device, and including a dogging member and a releasing member, key mechanism for retracting the latch bolt, means to lock the releasing member of said stop Work against movement in one direction, and means operated by the inner manual retracting device, but unaffected by said key mechanism, for releasing said locking means; substantially as described.
5. In a look, a latch bolt, inner and outer retracting hubs therefor, manually operable stop work to dog and release the outer hub, key mechanism for retracting the latch bolt, and means to prevent a releasing movement of said stop work except when said inner hub is operated; substantially as described.
6. In a lock, a latch bolt, a hub for retracting the same from the outside of the door, manually operable means to dog said hub, key mechanism for retracting the latch bolt, a rotary member to control the releasing movement of said dogging means inde pendently of said key mechanism, and means to operate said rotary member; substantially as described.
7 In a look, a latch bolt, an outer manual retracting device therefor, manually operable stop work, including a member to dog said outer retracting device, and a releasing member, a rotary hub having a part normally projecting into the path of said releasing member, and manually operable means to turn said hub out of its blocking position; substantially as described.

In a lock, a latch bolt, a hub for retracting the same from the outside of the door, manually operable stop work, including a dogging member for said hub, and a releasing member for said dogging member, and a second hub for retracting said latch bolt cooperating directly with said releasing member to prevent a releasing movement thereof; substantially as described.
10. In a look, a latch bolt, a hub for retracting the same from the outside of the door, manually operable stop work, including a slide for dogging said hub and a releasing slide, and a second hub for retracting the latch bolt so positioned relatively to said releasing slide as to normally prevent a releasing movement thereof; substantially as described.
11. In a look, a latch bolt, a hub for retracting the same from the outside of the door, manually operable stop work, including a dogging slide for said hub and a releasing slide, a second hub to retract the latch bolt, and cooperating projections on said releasing slide and said second hub respectively for preventing a releasing movement of the stop work when said second hub is in its normal position; substantially as described.
12. In a look, a latch bolt, hubs for retracting the same, night latch mechanism for dogging one of said hubs, having a releasing member cooperating directly with another hub, said releasing member being normally blocked against releasing movement by said second named hub, and being free for releasing movement only when said hub is turned to a predetermined extent; substantially as described.
13.
