IVY MQTIMMONDS, OF MITCHELL, OREGON.
BED.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that IVY MCTIMMONDS, a resident of Mitchell, Wheeler county, Oregon, and a native-born citizen of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to improvements in beds and especially with reference to the provision of a foldable bed spring or bed bottom, which may be widened or narrowed at will and used either on a double or single bedstead and also with reference to the.pro vision of a bedstead of novel construction which may be widened for use as a double bed or narrowed for use as a. single bed at will.
The invention consists in the features oit' construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed bottom or spring, constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and show ing the same extended for use as a double bed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same in folded position, for use as a single bed.
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly in section off the bedstead.
Fig. 5 is partly an end elevation and partly a transverse sectional view of the same, in widened position in full lines and narrowed as for use as a single bed i n dotted lines.
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views.
The bed bottom or spring 1 comprises a pair oi end .members Q which are preferably .channel irons. Each end member, has 4seetions 3, el, which are arranged end lo end and are `pivotally or hingedly eonnerted together at their npper sides as at 5. so that the sections 4 may be exlendeil lroin the seetions 3 to torni a double hed. or ma)y be tolded over and upon the. .sections lo lorm a singlel bed. as will be nnderszlood. 'lhe onter ends of the sections 3 oi' the end members are connected together by a bar li. lhe lower web 7 of cach section i is provided with a longitudinai. slot 8. A rod 9 connects the sections t together and has its ends 10 turned Specification of Letters 'Patenti Patented J une 5, 1917.
Application filed June 9, 1916. Serial N0. 102,732.
at right angles, and slidably engaged in the slots so that said rod may be moved to the outer ends of the sections 4 when the bed is extended for use as a double bed and so that `when the sections 4 are folded over the sections 3 to arrange the bed for use as asingle bed, the rod 9 will drop to the inner ends of the slots 8 and will be arranged at the side The head 1i and fooi 15 of the beesten;-
each comprise a pair of slidably related members 16, 17. The member 16is provided with a pair of posts 18. The member 17 has a single post 19 at its outer side. The.
member 1G has parallel spaced cross barsv Q0 which are here shown as dove-tailed channel bars, and the member 17 has correspond# ing cross bars 91, each of which is provided on its inner side with a dove-tai1ed tongue- Q2 slidably fitted in the dove-tailed groove formed by one of the bars 20. Hence the members of the head and foot of the bed are slidably connected and maybe extended to adapt the hed for use as a double bed or the member 17 may be moved inwardly to arrange their posts 19in line with two of the posts of the members 1G and thereby narrow the bed and enable it to be arranged for use as a single bed. The members 1G, 17 are provided with socket brackets Q3 for the rer rept-ion of the. studs i1 oi* the bcd bottom or frame. when the bed is arranged for use as a double bed and each member 16 also has a socket bracket 21- ior the reception of the stud l?, and to support the. correspondin g end or' the, bei] bottom section 3. brarkets 23 are ollset to allow complete telesroping` to the members of theI bed.
'lo lork the members 16. l? together, when the bed is arranged as a single bed, the seci lion l0 is provided in its upper side with a vertical opening on each side and lthe seetion 17 is provided at its` upper side with an arm 26 which extends inwardly above the These l section 17 and carries a vertically movable holt 27 which may be dropped into or drawn from either of the'openings 25.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A bed bottom or spring comprising end members, each consisting of a pair of hingedly connected sections, so that one ot' said sections max7 he folded on the other, and a bal' connecting the outer ends of each of the sections7 and a third bar slidably connected to one pair of the sections so that the third bar may be arranged at one side of the bottom -or spring, both 'when the same is in eX- tended and in folded position.
2. A bed bottom 'or spring comprising channeled end members, each consisting of memes necting the outer' ends of said sections and a Y third bar 'having down turned ends slidably engaged in said slots, said third bar being thus arranged for slidable movement on Said slotted sections.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
