CANDLE-HOLDER.
Application filed January 19, 1917.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-r BITTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved candle holder or candle stick, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is cheap and simple in construction and which is adapted to receive and hold candles of various sizes, diameters and shapes, and is not liable to be clogged by dripping candle grease.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan of a candle holder, in the form of a candle stick, constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown a saucer or base 1 is provided which has a dome 2 provided with a central opening 3 the wall of the said opening extending downwardly and being provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 4 at its lower side.
I also provide springs 5 of which any suitable number may be employed, two being here shown. Each spring comprises a base portion or member 6, upwardly and inwardly inclined portions 7 at the ends of the base member, and downwardly extending free end and counterengaging portions 8. Each end of the spring is connected to the inclined portion 7 by a curved portion 9 and each inclined portion 7 is connected to the depending free end portion 8 by a curved portion 10 so that each inclined portion 7 is adapted for radial and vertical angular movement with respect to the base portion and each free end portion 8 is also adapted for radial and vertical angular movement with respect to the inclined portion. The free end portions 8 are arranged in opposed and in parallel relation and are adapted to engage a candle placed between them to support and hold the candle, the

springs by reason of their construction, herein before described, permitting the depending free end portions to move toward and from each other and hence adapting the device to grasp and hold a candle of any diameter, size or shape. Said end portions are curved transversely to guide and fit the candle.
As here shown the base members or portions 6 of the springs or candle grasping lingers are arranged in crossed relation and secured between a pair of disks ll, 12, by rivets or other suitable devices 13. The said disks are also secured by rivets 14: to a disk 15 which is arranged and held in the opening or recess 3 and bears on the flange 4.
I would have it understood that any suitable supporting element may be employed in' connection with my candle holder as well as the base or saucer here shown, so that the candle holder may be used in connection with. sconces or other like devices as desired. The candle holder may be made of any suitable material.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I In a candle holder, a plurality of radially arranged spring candle grasping fingers each having a base member, an inclined portion, a curved portion connecting the base and inclined portions and also having a clownwardly extending free end and candle engaging portion and a curved portion connecting the inclined portion and free end and candle engaging portion, the said free end portions of the springs being opposed and arranged in parallel relation, in combination with a supporting element having a recess, disks between which the base members of the springs are secured and an element extending downwardly from the lower disk and arranged in said opening or recess.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH BITTER.
