IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,798, dated January 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES BIGEON, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bed- Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the followingI is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the brackets; and Fig. 3 is a plan.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to that class of bed-bottoms wherein an elastic web is .formed on and attached to a suitable framework provided for that purpose. It consists in attaching to the side or end rails, or to both as occasion may require, a series of springs made of any suitable elastic wire and formed into a double row of single coils, whereby a proper amount of resistance is given and a flat surface presented on which the mattress rests.
The advantages bf my invention consist in the superior elasticity ofthe structure, its evenness of surface, the ease with which the springs may be removed and replaced when required for transportation or removal from house to house, and the prevention of insects. Another advantage I claim for my invention is that the amount of resistance of the elastic web may be increased to any desired degree by increasing the number of springs which may be laid across from one side rail to the other.
In construction my invention is as follows: A A are the side rails, and B B the end rails ofthe frame of my improved bed-bottom, joined together by the brackets C C. Over the end rails are stretched a series of springs, D D, made of any suitable elastic wire and formed in a double row of single coils, as seen in Fig. 3. rIlhese springs are fastened to the rails by turning their ends over the rails and fastening them by means of wood screws. The sides of my improved bed-bottom are provided with springs E, which are made of heavier wire than that of which the other springs are made, and have coils onlyT on one side, which coils are of smaller size than those on springs D, which resist the additional strain to which bed-bot toms are subjected by persons getting in and out of bed. A series ofsmall Wire-links may be used to connect the coils of the several springs in order to distribute the strain among them. Increased strength may be given certain parts of this bed-bottom by adding springs of similar construction across from one side rail to the other where such additional strength is required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bed-bottom, consisting of a frame-work, as described, in combination with springs D and E, as herein specified.
2. A spring, D, formed of a double row of single coils, when used as and for the purpose described.
Attest: CHARLES BIGEON.
