Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mfay 29, 1917.
Application filed June 3, 1916. Serial No. 101,583.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL J. SULLi- VAN and CARLETON F. STEVENS, citizens of the United States, residing at Carson City, in the county of Ormsby and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Drawing Parallel Lines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to a device for drawing parallel lines, and particularly, to a straight edge which is so constructed as to enable it to be readily applied to a conventional type of ruler and cooperate therewith for facilitating the drawing of evenly spaced and accurate parallel lines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for rulers of a very cheap and simple construction, and particularly, one which maybe easily applied to a ruler, and which, when applied, will enable evenly spaced parallel lines to be readily drawn.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device in a manner to enable the ruler to which the device is applied, to be used as originally intended.
The invention will be more readily understood upon reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view illustrating the use of the invention:

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 represents a conventional type of ruler which is provided with a graduated scale along one of its edges. 2 represents the straight edge which comprises a pair of foldable sections 3 and 4, one of which, namely, section 4, having a tongue 5 which extends from the section in a direction longitudinally of the ruler to which it is applied. This tongue 5 serves as means for securing the straight edge to the ruler, and in order that it may be secured thereon, it is provided with openings 6 for receiving suitable screws which are fa tened into the body of the ruler. In order that the straight edge will be rigidly fastened to the ruler to precured to the fixed section 4 by the hinged "I connection 8 which renders it readily foldablo. When the device is to be used for drawing evenly spaced parallel lines, the section 3 of the straight edge will project, as shown in Figs. 4 and 1, at a right angle to the ruler, and when the ruler is to be used as originally intended, the section 3 may be folded upon the fixed section 4, and as the length of the section 3 is equal to the width of the ruler and also the fixed section 4, the straight edge of the ruler will not be interfered with.
While the straight edge is preferably in tended for use in connection with a wooden ruler, it may be also used in connection with a ruler, composed of any other desirable material.
A device produced, as above described, is very cheap in construction and readily applied to a ruler. These features would enable the straight edge to be manufactured and sold on the market either separately from the ruler, or as applied to a ruler.
We claim 1. In combination with a ruler, a straight edge cooperating therewith for drawing parallel lines, said straight edge comprising a pair of hinged sections, one of which is fixed to the ruler in a manner to permit the other section to project at a right angle from the ruler, said projecting section provided with graduations along one of its edges and having a length equal to the width of the ruler and adapted to be folded upon the fixed section to permit of the ruler being used as originally intended.
2. In combination with a ruler, a straight edge cooperating therewith for drawing parallel lines, said straight edge comprising a pair of hinged sections, one of which has a tongue extending longitudinally of the ruler and by whlch the straight edge is see cured to the ruler, said tongue having a prong struck up from its surface adapted to be embedded in the body of the ruler, said other section adapted to project at a right angle from the ruler and having graduations along one of its edges, said projecting section having a length equal to the Width of the ruler and adapted to be folded upon the fixed section to permit of the ruler being used as originally intended. 10
