Description

2.) 7 W.W.ANDERSON.
Improvement in Cotton Presses. I No 122,752, PatentedJan.16,1 872 WILLIAM W. ANDERSON, OF WARTRAOE, TENNESSEE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,752, dated January 16, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improved Cotton-Press, invented by WILLIAM W. AN- DERSON, of War-trace, in the county of Bedford and State of Tennessee.
My invention consists of a system of pulleys and a cord at each end of the follower for working it, the said cords, after passing over the pulleys, being run over a guide-pulley to a drum for winding them up, and the drum being operated by a cord, pulley, and a capstan, all arranged for obtaining great leverage, whereby the bale may be pressed with great force, and the work accomplished by one person, all as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is'a side elevation of my improved press, some parts being sectioned; and Fig. 2 is another side elevation.
A represents the follower or a carrier fo the follower, which may be placed upon said carrier, as indicated by the lines at B. This follower or carrier is slotted at each end for the reception of a number of pulleys, G, and in the upper part of the frame is a corresponding number of pulleys, E, mounted on a fixed support, F. G is a cord made fast to the fixed support F at one end, and arranged on these pulleys, and extended from them upon a guidepulley, H, to a winding-drum or pulley, I, on
the shaft J where it is made fast by the other end. K is a large pulley on shaft J at the center, on which a rope, L, is wound so as to draw off when the ropes G wind on, and said rope winds on a capstan, M, which is turned by a hand-lever, N. This provides a very simple and cheap arrangement, which may be economically constructed, mostly of wood, with more or less power, according to the number of pulleys O and E.
I may reverse the operation by making the upper fixed support for the pulleys the follower, and arrange the part here shown as the follower fixedly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A series of pulleys, l, mounted in the follower at each end, a corresponding series in a fixed support on the frame, a rope, Gr, guidepulley H, drums or pulleys I K, rope L, and capstan M, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
WILLIAM W. ANDERSON.
