IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,618, dated January 9, 1872.

Specification describing a nevvr and Improved Spring Bed-Bottom invented by SYLvEsTER LoGAN, of Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania.

My invention consists of In dia-rubber springs let into the ends of spring-bars of Wood, extending nearly from end to end of the bedstead, with hooks connecting the bars with eyebolts or other connection in the ends of the bedstead, the said hooks engaging the bars by said springs in such manner that there is an endwise or longitudinal as Well as a vertical springing' action of the bottom, and so as to form a cheap and desirable means of connecting the bars to the bedstead, all as hereinafter more fully described.

Figure l is partly a plan view and partly a horizontal section of parts of a bed-bottom constructed according to my impro vement, and Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. l on the line w x.

A represents one of the Wood spring-slats of the bed-bottom, which are nearly as long as the distance between the head and foot B represents a vulcanized India-rubber spring inserted in each slat near each end, as indicated by the dotted lines C, Fig. l, so

as to extend across a vertical slot, D, in the Slat, to be engaged by one end ofthe hook E, which connects at its other end With an eyebolt, F, screwing into the end piece G of the bedstead. All the slats are connected in like manner at each end, and thereby the bottom p has much greater action than the slats Would otherwise have, and the India-rubber springs facilitate the holding of the slats by the hooks Without splitting them, so that said hooks and eyebolts, which constitute a cheap Way of connecting said slats, may be used, which could not be done without said springs or sonic other device to prevent splitting 5 but any otherY device Would not increase the springing capacity of the bottom, While performing the other functions.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the India-rubber springs B and hooks E with the slats and the bedstead, said hooks being connected to the latter, all substantially as specified.
