To all "whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVlLLIAM SOHREIBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gate latches, and is particularly directed to the provision of means operable from either side of the gate for actuating the latch bar.

It is the object of the present invention to generally improve the structure and efficiency of latch devices of this character, and to so arrange the parts thereof that they will not be liable to be broken ofi, it being more specifically the object in this latter connection to provide handle members for actuating the latch bar which are readily removable and which when not in operation, may swing to lie against the gate.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described pointed out in the appended claim.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device attached to a gate,

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the operating bolt or shaft of the device,

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, and

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the handle members.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is shown a gate 5 carrying the improved latch structure and a post 6 against which the gate is adapted to swing, a keeper 7 of conventi nal yp being P tioned. n thi P st and particularly and provided in its top with a notch 8 for receiving the latch bar, and having its forward edge beveled to provide a cam edge 9 leading thereto.

Journaled in a transverse bore 10 in the gate sill is an actuating shaft 11 having one end squared at 12 to engage in a squared opening 13 formed in the rear end of the latch bar 1 1-, this bar extending outwardly of the gate sill to engage the keeper as in the usual manner. Secured to the gate at the ends of the bore 10 are circular plates 15 provided with openings receiving the ends of the shaft. Also secured to the gate at the latch bar side thereof and forwardly of the shaft is a guide plate 17 carrying a loop 18 slidably holding the bar. The bar is normally urged into downward or engaging position by a leaf spring 19 secured to the upper end of the guide plate and hearing thereon.

Detachably and pivotally mounted handles are provided for the ends of the shaft and each of these handles comprises a single length of stout wire having its in termediate portion and the portions adjacent thereto bent to form a grip 20 and having its end portions further bent and directed laterally from the intermediate portion of the grip to form a shank 21, these end portions being terminally bent to form eyes 22 adapted to lie at the sides of the shaft. Pins 23 are passed through these eyes and threadedly engage in the ends of the shaft to hold the handles in place; the

handles being so positioned relative to the shaft that they may normally swing on these pins to lie against the gate, thus avoiding the possibility of their being struck and broken off, as with handles of a rigid type extending outwardly from the shaft.

Thus an exceedingly simple and efiicient device has been provided, which may be readily associated with a gate for latching the same.

gagement with said keeper, a spring carried on said latch bar and bearing below the upper end of the keeper for holding the latch bar at the limit of its downward movement, handles having looped ends and the alined loops for supporting the handles.
