T0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it lrnown that ll, JOHN Asn'ron Doelen, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Waltham, county of ll/liddlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Apparatus for Vaporizing and Burning Hydrocarbon Fuels, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to steam boilers and more particularly to boilers used in connection with motor vehicles and has for its object the provision of an improved means. for vaporizing 4and burning the fuel whereby greater eciency is obtained and the desirability of steam automobiles greatly enl fhanced.
v drawing,
rlhe novel features of the invention l'will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying and burning the fuel.
1n the drawing, 10 indicates the boiler shell which is provided with the heads 11 and 12, the boiler being o the tubular type, and the tubes 13 thereof being secured in the heads 11 and 12 in any.' suitable manner. A conduit 1e communicates with the lower ends of the tubes 13 and is adapted to convey the fuel mixture from a mixing chamber 15 with which it is connected. Mounted on the casing formin the shaft 1% of which carries a fan 18. A conduit 19 supplies air to the central portion of the fan 18.
Above the head 11 is a chamber 20into which the burnt gases pass, this chamber being provided with an outlet 21. `:For the purpose in order to increase the etliciency of the apparatus, l arrange across the' chamber 20 a [plurality of pipes 22, the ends 23 of which.
are open to receive air and the ends 241 of which aunicate with a pipe 25 which leads to the conduit 19.
1t customary to use a hydrocarbon'fuel which is formed by the air and which is a vertical section through a boiler and the apparatus'for vaporizing l the chamber 15 is a motor 16,`
of heatingthe air supplied to the fan 18,'
in automobiles and ,to provide means for vaporizingthis fuel before it reaches the point of consumption and, for the purpose of forming a combustible mixture, ll arrange in the conduit 19 a fuel pipe 26 vthe upper end of which is provided with outlet openings 2T( adapted: to spray the fuel into the center of the fan. |lhe pipe 26 is supplied by means of a conduit 28. Y rll`he fan 18 is rotated by means of the motor 16 and assists in breaking up the fuel into a hnely divided state so that it will readily vaporize and mix with the air which is drawn in through the conduit ,19.
The tubes 13 are preferably lled with a noncombustible material which is porous or so arranged as to permit the passage of the fuel therethrough, and in the operation of the apparatus the fan 18 forcee the mixture,
the hydrocarbon, through the lilling in the tubes 13, the mixture burning in the tubes and heating the filling and thereby utilizing the fuel very eciently. f y
llt has been found in actual practice that a boiler of this type has a very high emciency when` compared with the usual type of boilers having open dues and a burner,
the products of combustion passing through the tubes and heating them.
For the purpose of conveniently iting the fuel, ll arrange a sparlr plug 29 in the wall of the chamber 20, this plug ga spark in the chamber 20 and igniting the fuel above the head 11.
Thernixture is forced through the tubes means of the fan 18, this Afan also drawing the air through the tubes 22 where it is heated and this reheating of the air fao raises the eciency of -the apparatus very materially.
'llhe motor adapted to be operated from the usual storage battery with which modern automobiles `are equipped,i
' Having thus described my invention, what' ll claim 1s:
16 is preferably electric andA A steam generating construction for auto mobiles comprisin Athe combination of a Vertical boiler having at the top thereof a chamber for the products of combustion, ai,
motor and direct connected fan, a, conduit for conducting the fan discharge to the bottom of the tubes of theboiler, means for conducting liquid fuel to said fan, a plurality of air pipes in said top chamber and e conduit for carrying the nir heated in seid mener? `ture presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN ASHTON DOBLE.
