Application filed April 13, 1916. Serial No. 90,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Supporting vestibule-Diaphragm Face-Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for supporting vestibule diaphragm face plates.
The object of the invention is to provide supporting the face vestibuled cars so arranged as to minimize wear on the buffer stems and yieldingly support the weight of the face plate from the end of the car.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide means of the above indicated character of simple arrangement and minimum number of parts.
1n the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a passenger car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged, sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig.1 and taken substantially on the line 22 thereof. And Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawing, 10 denotes the end wall of a vestibuled passenger car, 11 the buffer plate, 12-12 the side stems of the bufler mechanism, 13'the main stem of the louder mechanism, 14 the diaphragm face plate of usual construction, 15 the foot plate, 16 the bellows diaphragm and 17--17 the spring controlled rods at the upper portion of the wardly. All the foregoing parts are or may be of usual or desired form.
For yieldingly supporting the diaphragm face plate and the diaphragm associated therewith, and also to permit free movement of said face plate inwardly and outwardly as well as laterally and vertically, I have pro vided the following means: On each side of the diaphragm and secured to the end of the car are brackets 1818 each having an out plates of wardy extended, perforated arm 19. To the I lower end of each leg of the diaphragm face face plate for forcing the latter outplate, is secured another bracket 20 which also is provided with an outwardly and rearwardly extended perforated arm 21. Extending between each corresponding pair of brackets 18 and 20 on each side of the vestibule, is the improved hanger A. Each hanger A consists of a single rod threaded at each end as indicated-at 22 and provided substantially at the center thereof with an integral spring coil 23. The threaded ends of each rod A are passed through the perforated members 19 and 21 and are adjustably held in fixed position with respect thereto by nuts 2424 on opposite sides of each member 19 and 20.
By the foregoing arrangement, it will be seen that the coils 23-23 will permit the necessary vertical movements of the face plates and atthe same time are sufliciently flexible to permit the necessary lateral movements of said face plates. By the arrangement shown, I avoid the use of linked parts and thus the noise incident thereto. At the same time, the hangers shown are of simple construction and may be readily and cheaply manufactured, as will be apparent.
1 claim:
1. A single piece hanger rod for vestibule diaphragm face plates and the like, said rod being yieldingly extensible and laterally flexible.
2. A hanger rod for diaphragm face plates and the like having an integral coil formed therein intermediate its ends, thereby permitting extension and contraction in the length of said rod and lateral flexing thereof.
3. A hanger rod for diaphragm face plates and the like having an integral coil portion mtermediate its ends, the ends of said rod being threaded.
4. The combination with a vestibuled car and a diaphragm face plate, of means for supporting said face plate, said means including a pair of upper brackets secured to the car end, a pair of lower brackets secured to said face plate, said brackets being arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the vestibule, and single piece hanger rods extending between and secured to each pair of brackets, each of said rods being extensible and readily flexible.
5. The combination with a vestibuled car and a diaphragm face plate, of a pair of uping brackets and having an integral coil therein intermedlate its ends.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I I" have hereunto subscribed my name this 16th day of Mar. 1916.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
