Description

E. J. FELLMAN.
HALF SCREEN HANGER,
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2, I916.
1,22%,9 1 2., Patented May 8, 1917.
v r nos,
HALF-SCREEN ansen.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. FELLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Half- Screen Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hangers for screens or other'pivotally suspended sash members, and is more particularly directed to the provision of an improved half screen hanger of the type described in Patent No. 1,155,412, granted to me October 5, 1915.
It is principally the object of the present invention to simplify the structure of hanger devices of this type with a view to procuring economy in manufacture and readiness of assembly of the hanger in operative position.
Inasmuch as the width of blind stops varies considerable particularly in different sections of the country, it is also an important object to provide a hanger device which is adapted for association with window frames havingblind stops of varying widths.
A further object is to providea hanger.
device wherein the screen may be detachably connected with a window frame, in such manner however-that detachment of the screen may be procured only when the screen is in one certain intermediate outwardly swung position, whereby accidental detachment of the screen during such opening movements thereof as would occur forinstance in dusting cloths, is prevented, and also whereby the screen when held in an inwardly swung position by the usual catch members, cannot be detached thus rendering the screen burglar proof in conjunction with the ordinary fasteners, which it will be understood only hold the screen against horizontal movement and not against vertical movement.
lVith the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts more particularly hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings;

application filed June 2, 1916. Seria1 No. 101,230.
hanger device associated with a .window frame and half screen sash and looking out wardly of the window, this view being taken sectionally through the frame, as indicated by the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2? is a vertical sectional view taken through the screen and frame on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal view taken through the bottom portions of the hanger, on the line 8-8. of'Fig. '1.
Fig el is a perspective view ofone of the hanger plates, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other hanger plate.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is shown a window frame 5 in which ismounted the usual upper and lower sash members 6 and 7 respectively, and which is provided out wardly of the upper sash member with the usual blind stops 8. 9 designates a'screen sash which in its normal closed position lies outwardly of and against the blind stops and which has secured to its upper rail a shut off strip 10 which is of a width equal to the width of the blind stops and which extends between the blind stops to completely close the space between the upper rail of the screen sash and the lower railof the upper glass sash 6 to prevent the entrance of flies or other insects through this space. Inasmuch as the width of the blind stops encountered particularly in different sections .of the country may vary to considerable extent, the shut off strip 10 is provided to correspond to the width of the blind stop, and also to corresponjdto the distance between the shut off strips for different sizes of windows.
The hanger device comprises right and left'hand hanger plates B and A respectively. Each of these plates is angular section and includes a base portion 11, disposed overand secured to the, ends of both the upper screen sash rail and the shut off strip whereby these portions are mutually strengthened and upstanding from the outer sides of the base portions are the wing por tions12. The wing portion of the left hand member A is provided with a triangular opening 13 and the wing of the right hand member-B is provided with a vertically extending slot opening 14 which terminates in its upper end in horizontal alinement with the upper portion of the triangular opening,
13 and which has its lower end extended into the base portion 11 of the plate, and that portion of the plate inwardly of the opening 14: and adjacent the angle of the plate is struck inwardly to provide a passage 15. Pivot nails 16 are driven into the blind stops 8 in such manner that when the screen sash 9 is in closed position, the nails are disposed in the upper portions of the openings of the hanger plates. These nails are preferably provided with shoulders 17 limiting their movement into the blind stops to determine the proper degree of projection of their pivot portions.
Thus the screen sash is mounted in a manner whereby it may be freely swung out wardly. To attach the sash member, it is swung outwardly a certain distance which is determined by the degree of tilting movement of the sash, with the left hand hanger plate as a pivot whereby the right hand pivot plate may be relatively disposed to position its pivot nail in the lower portion of its opening 14, whereby the plate may be entirely detached from the nail by moving the adjacent end of the sash outwardly to disengage the nail through the passage 15. Detachment of the sash in positions inwardly of the above specified position is prevented by abutment of the side of the sash with the window frame, and detachment of the sash in positions outwardly of the specified position is prevented by abutment of the top of the sash with the blind stops and also by abutment of the ends of the hanger plate wings with the upper sash member 6. Thus the screen sash may be detached only at one certain pivotal position with respect to the frame.
Displacement of the screen sash when secured in inwardly swinging position is prevented by reason of the fact that opening of the left hand hanger plate is closed and thus provides a positive securing means, in contradistinction to the structure of my heretofore mentioned previous patent. Thus the conventional type of fasteners, which only hold the screen against horizontal movement may be employed with the present detachable hanger device to prevent any manipulation of the sash from the outside, when the fasteners are actuated.
Inasmuch as the shut off strip 10 is utilized in the present structure to entirely close the space between the upper sash and the screen sash with no dependence upon the hanger device, the present type of device is adapted for use in connection with window frames having varied widths of blind stops.
The specific triangular shape of the open ing 13 of the left hand plate member, while affording a proper pivotal suspension for the adjacent end of the sash, also aids n1ateri all y in the removal of the sash from the frame, inasmuch as it permits an upward movement of the entire sash to minimize the vertical tiltin movement necessary, and also minimize the necessary horizontal tilting movement of the sash by permitting outward bodily n'lovement of the sash when in such bodily raised position.
It is noted that the apex of the triangular opening 13 is in horizontal alinement with the top of the slot 141:, and thus when the sash is in an adjacent closed position, it is held against lateral movement by abutment of the respective pivot member with the sides of the triangular opening.
I claim:
1. A hanger devicecomprising the combination with a window frame and a sash member, of suspension plates on the sash member including upstanding ear portions, one of said ear portions being provided with a triangular aperture, the other portion being provided with a slot open at its bottom portion and having its top portion terminating in substantially the same horizontal plane as the apex of the triangular opening, and pivot members on the inner side faces of the frame engaged in said aperture and slot. 1
2 A hanger device comprising the com bination with a window frame and a sash member, of angular suspension plates including base portions secured at the ends of the top of the sash, and upstanding ear portions, one of said ear portions being provided with an aperture, the other end portion being provided with a vertical slot extending into the respective base portion, the angular portion of the respective plate being offset inwardly, and pivot members engaged in said aperture and slot.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVi cousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
