JEREMIAH J'. SULLIVAN, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
LATERAL-IVIOTION TRUCK-BOLSTER.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 191'?.
Original application filed August 22, 1916, Serial No. 116,275. Divided and this application filed December 22, 1916. Serial No. 138,401.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JEREMIAH J. SULLI- VAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville. in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and lmproved Lateral-Motion Truck-Bolster, of which the following is a full. true, and eXact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a lateral motion truck bolster which is simple in construction, and which while permitting a limited lateral play of a car or tender, serves not only to retain the centerplate normally at the center line, but also tends to increase the resistance to an abnormal movement of the car or tender.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
ln the drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view illustrating my bolster;
Fig'. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of Fig. 1 with the center-plate removed; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of Fia. 1.
By referring' to the drawings. it will be seen that a bolster 5 is mounted in the usual manner. and is provided at its top with a recess 6. the bottom of the recess having four longitudinally disposed channels 8. the side walls ot each of these channels diverging upwardly so that rollers 9 which are disposed longitudinally in the recess 6 will be normally disposed each at the center of a channel 8. The rollers 9 roll to these centers under the action. of ,(Iravity. Disposed in the recess 6. there is a center-plate 1() on which the body bolster ot the car or tender is mounted. the body holster being` indicated in dotted lines at 11.
The bottom oi' the center-plate 11 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed channels 13 the side walls 14 of which diverge downwardly above the upwardly divergfing' side walls of the channels 8. The rollers 9 are normally disposed not only at the centers of the channels 8. but also at the centers of the channels 13, as shown in the drawings.
1t will be seen that the width of the channels 8 is substantially the same as the width of the channels 13, so that the rollers 9 may have considerable freedom of movement not only'with reference to the center-plate 10, but also with reference to the bolster 5. The bolster 5 at the bottom of the recess 6, at the outer sides of the outer channels 8, is inclined outwardly and upwardly, as shown at 15, the inclined portions 15 of the bolster 5 extending substantially to positions at the same level as the bottom of the center-plate 10. These inclined portions 15, which are steeper than the sides of the channels 8, are provided to offer greater resistance to the upward movement of the rollers 9 when there is a tendency to an abnormal lateral movement of the car or tender.
The channels 8 and 13 are shaped to keep the rollers spaced from each other, and to return the center-plate 10 to normal position after movement. lt is also possible to make a general inspection at the sides of the center-plate 10.
Havingl thus described my invention.l l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. ln an article ot the class described, a bolster having a recess. the bolster forming' sides for the recess. there being a plurality oi longitudinally extending channels in the bolster at the bottom oi the recess. the sides of each channel divergingr upwardly. a Center-plate disposed in the recess and having' its sides normally spaced from the said sides of the recess. there beine' a plurality of longitudinally extending channels in the bottomof the center-plate. the sides of the last mentioned channels divergino downwardly. and al plurality ot rollers disposed in the channels between the center-plate and the bolster. the bolster at the bottom of the recess being' inclined outwardly and upwardly from the outer sides of the outer channels to ofier greater resistance under unusual conditions.
2. ln an article of the class described. a bolster having a recess, the bolster forming sides for the recess. there being' a plurality of longitudinally extending; channels in the bolster at the bottom of the recess. the sides of each channel diverainn upwardly. a center-plate disposed in the recess and having its sides normally spaced from the said sides of the recess, there being a plurality of lonstantially the same width as ltbe first mengitudinally extending Channels in the bottom of the center-plate, the sides of the last mentioned channels diverging downwardly, the last mentioned channels being of subpla-te and the bolster, the bolster at the bottoni of the recess being inclined outwardly and'upwardly from the outer sides of the outer channels to oer greater resistance under unusual conditions.
