THEODORE L. PATRICK, 0F PAWPAW, ILLINOIS.
GATE ADJUSTMENT.
Application filed. May 20, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Tnnooonn L. PATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawpaw, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate Adjustments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of means whereby a gate or the like may be adjusted when desired to compensate for any sagging of the gate or its support, with a view of maintaining the gate properly balanced to facilitate opening or closing of the, latter.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
lVhile the essential characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, the preferred embodiment of the invention is herein illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation showing the parts in normal position, the adjusted position of the parts being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking at right angles toward the gate post.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjusting element.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the means for holding the element in adjusted position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in detail A indicates the gate post, 13 the gate, and C the keeper post. The gate may be of any suitable construction, and has associated therewith a diagonally disposed support 5, the latter having its lower end pivotally secured in any suitable manner to the post A. In this specific instance an eye member 6 is shown projecting from the post A, and constitutes a fixed pivot, adapted to receive the headed element 7 carried by the lower end of the support 5, whereby the gate is mounted on the post for swinging movement.
Mounted upon one side of the post A, and pivoted in any suitable manner at a point Specification of Letters Patent.

between its ends, is an arm 8, the latter carrying at its upper end a block 9, from which projects an eye member 10. These parts as a unit constitute what may be termed a movable pivot for the gate, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully describedf A suitable connection between the support 5 and the block 8 is provided to assist in supporting the gate, thereby relieving the fixed pivot of undue strain. As shown in this particular instance a rod, cable or the like has one end fixed to the support 5, and its opposite end operatively associated with the eye member 10 projecting from the block. The movable pivot is normally disposed out of alinement with the fixed pivot to a certain degree, so that the gate B will be slightly unbalanced under normal conditions to facilitate its opening and closing as will be readily understood, and that the gate and post B may be provided with suitable latch elements cooperating to maintain the gate in closed position.
Now, should for any reason the movable pivot be moved out of its normal position with respect to the fixed pivot, such as for instance through the sagging of the post A, thereby resulting in the sagging of the gate, the movable pivot may be restored to normal position by moving the arm 8 upon its pivot in the proper direction, whereupon the gate is again properly balanced.
WVith a view of locking the arm 8 in any position for the purpose hereinabove mentioned, I preferably provide a hook-like element 11 pivotally mounted upon the post A and adapted to cooperate with a series of teeth 12 provided along one of the longitudinal edges of the arm as clearly illus trated in the drawing, although various means for this purpose may be employed.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation, although it might here be stated that various parts of the invention may be constructed from any suitable material, design and dimensions without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is j The combination with a post, of a gate therefor, a support fixed to said gate and pivotally mounted on the post, a vertically In testimony whereof I afiix my signature movable member on said post, a connection 111 presenceof two wltnesses. between sa1d post and movable member for adjusting said gate,- said member having a THEODORE PATRICK 5 toothed surface and a locking element car- Witnesses:
