Description
UNHE ST FEM/E.
SHARPENING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24:, 1917.
5 Application filed Jl in 7. 1916. Serial No. 102.210.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM M. Pawn-1n, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Madison, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to grinding and polishing and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in scissors sharpening machines.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a scissors sharpening means having a new and improved arrangement of sharpening elements whereby to give to the scissors, or the blade being sharpened thereby the proper cut.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a sharpening machine of the class described having a grinding element provided with angularly related grinding faces affording the proper angle of cut desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be attached to a desired source of power, or may be driven by hand.
new and improved clamping means being 7 associated therewith for applying the same to a table or the like.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved sharpening device will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing. in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a sharpening machine embodying the improvements of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the same; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view showing the manner of engaging the retaining clamp with the frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing. wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, F designates the main frame of my improved sharpening device, the same being composed of parallel arranged stringers 1 and 2, the same having their free ends connected by an end stringer 3 and a stringer e. A pair of vertically arranged parallel standards 5 form an upstanding bearing frame receiving a shaft 6.
5, transverse pins 11 serving to retain said shaft in said hearing. A pair of diagonal braces 12 extend upwardly from the stringers 1 and2 and engage with the standards A pulley wheel. 13 is mounted on one free end of the shaft 6 and is adapted to receive power from any suitable source. A crank 14 is detachably carried by the opposite end of the shaft 6, a retaining pin 15 serving to hold said crank on said shaft.
I provide an improved type of clamp for mounting the frame F on an object, said clamp including a U-shaped frame 16 having a gripping jaw 17 formed with a recess 18 engageable with a recess 1!) formed in the end stringer 3. A screw 20 having a wing nut 21 on the free end thereof serves to engage an object, in the present instance a table, 22-and said stringer 3 for retaining the frame on the table. A pair of curved spring arms 23 carried by the clamp 16 cxtends over the frame F, said arms 23 having loops 24 in the free ends thereof, said loops being engageablo in recesses 25 formed in the upper faces of the stringers l and 2.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided an improved type of knife and scissors sharpening machine. the proper out being provided by virtue of the inclined angularly related faces of the wheels 7 and 8. In use the. shaft is rotated and the blade to be sharpened is placed at the vertex of the in cline faces of the sharpening wheels 7 and 8. This will cause the proper angle of cut to be given to the blade. and at the same time sharpening the blades.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction. operation and advantages of my invention may be had. and while. I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. T
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a grinding machine including a base frame, of a clamping member therefor including a frame, one end of said frame engaging said base frame, and a pair of spring arms extending from said clamp for engagement with said base frame.
2. The combination with a grinding machine inoluding a base f 'ame composed of longitudinal stringers, of means for clamping said frame including a clamping memher having a jaw for engagement with one end of said base frame, and a plurality of spring arms extending from said clamp for engagement with the longitudinal stringers of said base frame.
3. The combination With a grinding and polishing machine including a base .frame composed of longitudinal stringers and end stringers, of means for supporting said frame including a clamp having a stationary jaw, spring arms carried by said clamp for engagement with said longitudinal stringers, said base frame being provided with a recess to accommodate said jaw, and means for clamping said jaw to an object.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
