BOB-SLE!) RUNNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 310, 191'?.
Application filed September 2, 1916. Serial No. 118,237.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, DAVID PLATTNER and RODNEY H. YALE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Lincoln, county of Lancaster, and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sled Runners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bob sled runners, and the like; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what we now believe to be the preferred embodiment and mechanical expression of the invention from among other forms and constructions within the spirit and scope thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a runner with an exceedingly strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive nose composed of sections that can be readily assembled and secured and that will constitute an eifective brace and guard for the front end of the runner body.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and particularly set forth and specified hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawinge- Figure 1, is a side elevation of a runner embodying our invention.
Fig. 2, is an elevation of the opposite side of the runner.
Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 3 3 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of the pressed steel blanks or sections.
In the drawings, we show the front portion of a runner wherein the wood portions thereof are formed by straight runner body 1 and a separate nose piece or filler 1a, rising from the front end of body 1, and having a Hat bottom face resting on the flat or straight top edge 1 of said body. The bottom edge of the body 1, curves upwardly and forwardly at the front portion 2, and the front or bottom edge of the nose piece-1a, curves upwardly and forwardly in continuation thereof.
The body 1, is equipped with shoe 3, at its front end terminating at the curved edge portion 2 of @the body, i
Our invention involves a peculiar metal casing or housing that completes the nose portion of the runner and renders the same exceedingly strong, rigid and durable, by approximately inclosing the nose piece 1a and the front end of the body 1 and by being continuous across the junction between said nose piece and body. rThis metal nose or housing is composed of two stiff rigid shells or sections, an upper longitudinal section, and a lower longitudinal section, each section being pressed or struck up from sheet steel, although the invention is not so limited.
The upper longitudinal section curves upwardly and forwardly and faces the top edge of the front portion of the body and the complete top edge of the nose piece and one vertical side face of the nose piece and a portion of the corresponding side face of the front end of thebody, while the lower section of said metal housing also curves upwardly and forwardly and faces the opposite vertical side face of the nose piece and portion of the body and the bottom edges Y of the nose piece and front end of the body.
The rear ends of these two metal housing sections are rigidly clamped and secured to the top and bottom edges of the front portion of the runner body by vertical bolt 12, passing through the body and sections at a distance in rear of the nose piece la.
The housing sections and the nose piece and body are also rigidly secured together by bolts 13, passing through the transverse walls of the sections and through'the overlapping portions of the body and nose piece.
The upper section of the housing is formed with a longitudinal top wall or flange 6, that is continuous throughout the length of the top edge of the nose piece and across the junction between the rear end of said piece and onto a substantial length of the top edge of the body 1. This wall tightly fits and conforms to the curvature of said edge of the nose piece and its rear portion approximately conforms to the horizontal plane of the top edge of the body. Throughout the length of one edge said wall is formed with depending edge or narrow flange 6a, slightly lapping one vertical side face of the nose piece and of the front end of the body. At the opposite side edge of said wall 6, the section is formed throughout its length, with a longitudinal vertical wall 7, in the form of a deep or wide ange that snugly and approximately completely faces the other vertical side face of the nose piece and depends at the corresponding side face of the body and approximately covers the joint between said 5 piece and body at said side face of the runner.
The lower section of the metal housing is formed with a longitudinal bottom wall or flange 8, corresponding to wall 6, of the upper section and extending from the front end of shoe 3, to the top edge of the nose piece la, and fitting and conforming to the curvature of the bottom edge of the front end of the body l, and the edge of the nose piece in continuation of said body edge.
This wall 8 is continuous across the junction between the nose piece and body and extends throughout the length of said piece and is formed with an upturned edge or short fiange 8a, (corresponding to edge 6a) engaging the same side faces of the nose piece and body that are engaged by vertical Wall or wide iiange 7, of the upper housing section.
The lower housing section is also formed with longitudinal vertical wall or wide flange 9, corresponding to vertical wall 7 and forming the other side or vertical wall of the housing and engaging the vertical side faces of the nose and body that are opposite those covered or partially covered by ther vertical wall 7. The upper end of the nose piece is rounded and formed with a transverse opening, and the upper ends of I `the vertical walls 7, 9 of the metal housing are found with transverse apertures to regis- Y ter with the opening in said nose piece, and
form the eye 4, of the runner nose.
Said opposite vertical walls of the housing are also preferably formed with bolt or rivet holes adjacent to said edge e to receive transverse bolts or rivets l0, extending through said walls and the nose piece and binding said vertical walls 7, 9, adjacent the side faces of the nose piece and the front ends of the housing sections against vertical play and separation.
The upper end of the top wall 6, is curved downwardly to provide the rounded or convexed portion 6" fitting down on and conforming to the rounded upper end of the nose piece, and terminating in the transverse end edge 6.
The upper endY of the wall 8, is curved upw'ardly and rearwardly to provide the rounded or convexed portion 8b fitting and conforming tothe said'rounded end of the nose piece, and terminating Yin the transverse end edge 8".
Y The vertical Walls 7 9, preferably increase in vertical depth towardY the upper or front end of the housing and are notched and rounded at their upper ends to permitthe edges 6c and 8, to abut andtheedges'of Y the walls 9', 7, to abut the edges of the short flanges or edge 6, 8, when the housing sections are secured together and to the wood members of the runner. These sections thus form a hollow metal nose or housing ap-V proximately completely inclosing the upper end ofthe nose piece.
It will be noted that each section of the metalhousing is approximately L shape in cross section.
This metal housing renders the nose of the runner' exceedingly strong, rigid and durable and so braces and protects the oint between the wood nose piece andV runner body as well as the wood nose as to render the runner as an entiretyY of maximum so strength and durability. Y
It is evident that various. changes,modi-v ications, and variations might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention and hence wevdo not 35 wish to limit ourselves to the exact disclosures hereof.
