LAUNDRY-MACHINE.
1 ,220,620. Specification of Letters Patent.
. To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, Lamanoox H. FREE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundry- Machines, of which-the following isa specification.
This invention relates generally to laundry machinery and particularly to safety appliances utilized on such machines.
More specifically the invention relates to a safety appliance for body and sleeve ironers and it comprises mechanism in the path of the hands of theoperator for disconnecting the power of the pressing mechanism when the handof the operator reaches the danger point.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the constructionand combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a body and sleeve ironer equipped with the appliance; Fig. 2 is an end view looking from the right to left of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 1s an enlarged detail view of a portion of the machine taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the machine; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of machine may be provided with my improved safety appliance but I have shown a type of machine'which is adaptable for the device, and
the machine comprises a standard'l pro-. vided with a mainironing roll shaft 2,,
mounted in bearings 2' and 2", a main ironing .roll 3, a presser roll shaft 4, a presser roll 5, and suitable'mechanism including gears 6, 7, 8 and 9 for driving the ironing roll shaft 2 from asuitable motor 10. ,The
presser roll shaft 4; hasmounted on it a pair ofarms 11 and 12 keyed to a shaft 13 upon which the pinion 6' and the -gear 7 are loosely mounted, the pinion 6 and the. gear 7 being attached together.
Suitable mechanism is provided for swing ing the shaft 4, and it comprises a magnet.
14 secured to the standard 1, and having an armature15 secured. to a lever 16 piyoted in a bracket 17 secured to the frame and having its. opposite end engaging a rod 18 extending up into a suitable socket 19 in is moved into engagement w1th the ironing roll. A suitable gear 20 is mounted upon the shaft4 and when the presser roll 5 is in engagement with the ironing roll this gear meshes with a pinion 21 upon the ironing roll shaft 2.
Any suitable switch mechanism may be provided for controlling the supply of current to the magnet but I- have shown a construction which is effective, and this mechanism comprises a pair of contacts 22, and a movable contact holder 23 carrying a pair of contacts 24. The holder 23 is mounted upon an arm 25 provided with a treadle 26 mounted in-a suitable bracket 27 secured to the'frame. When the treadle is depressed, the switch is closed and current is supplied to the magnet.
The type of machine already described does.
not form any part of this invention, except so far as its features enter into the combination, but the invention itself resides in the combination of this machine, or any type of ironing machine, with a safety appliance and in the features of the safety appliance'itself, and this appliance will now be shown, and provided with a contact arm 31 rigid with the shaft.-- This contact arm carries at its outer end a contact holder 32 provided with a pair of carbon contacts 33 held in the holder by set' screws 34. The contact holder is insulated'from the arm 31. The arm 31 carries a strip 35 pivotally mountedon the arm and adapted to swing iover afixed portion of the bearing 2'" an i hold the arm. with the contacts elevated. The contacts 33 cooperate with contacts 36 mounted in a contact holder 37 secured on a fixed arm=-38 mounted upon a. fixed part of theframe' or-standard.
Rigidly secured to the shaft 30 and beyond the ends of the ironingroll 3 are arms 39 and 40, carrying at their lower ends-a trip roll 41. The arms 39 and 40 and the roll are arranged so that when the arm 31 is rocked, so that its contacts 33 are in engagement with contacts 36, as is shown in F g. 2, the trip roll 41 stands out just above the surface of the-presser roll 5,-as is shown in Fig. 2, and in the path of the fingers of, the operator, the tri roller 41 rolling upon the surface of the article operated upon and against the periphery of the presser roll 5. This position of the trip roller and the switch takes place when the trip 35 is in the position shown in Fig. 2. In order to cause the parts to normally assume this position, a spring42 is coiled about the shaft 30 and has one end extending under the arm 39 with the other end passing under the edge of the bar 28. The spring however may be secured in any suitable manner to bring about the result. v
In operation, the motor drives the ironing roll shaft 2 and the ironing roll 3. When the operator presses the treadle current is passed through the magnet and the pressing roll. is" brought into position, the operator having-previously started the article upon the pressing roll. In the meantime, however, the gears 20 and 21 cause the presser roll to be driven with the ironing roll. The operator then feeds the article through and in case a hand or a finger should pass too far the trip roller 41 is engaged, causing the shaft 30 to be rocked in a counter clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 2, when the contacts 33 and 36 are broken and the trip 35 'will engage on the top of the bearing 2 and hold the switch broken or the contacts out" of engagement. This switch is placed in the magnet circuit so that when the switch is broken the magnet circuit is broken, causing the release of the armature 15 and the dropping of the presser roll 5, irrespectiveof the fact that the operator may have his foot upon the treadle 26. The contact operated by the trip may also operate to control the supply of current to the driving motor. To restore the circuit,
' the trip 35 is rocked by hand so as to move out of engagement with the bearing and into the position shown in Fi 2.
Having described my invention}, I claim 1. In combination, a platen" member, a
' presser member, electrically operated means for bringingabout a pressure between said members, and means in the entrance to saidpresser members for breaking the circuit of said electrical means, and co-extensive with the pressing members.
2. In combination with a stationa roll, a presser roll, means for driving sai rolls, means for creating a pressure between said rolls, and a safety appliance for controlling the operation of the pressure creating means,
and com rising a roll in the entrance to said rolls an adapted to be operated by the hand of the operator.
3. Incombination with a stationar roll, a presser roll, means for driving sai rolls, electrical means for bringing about a pres-' sure between said rolls and a safety appliance for releasing sai pressure and comprising a roll in the entrance to said rolls and adapted" to be operated by the hand of the operator, and a switch for said electrical means actuated by said roll.
4. In combination with a stationary roll, a presser roll, means for driving said rolls, electrical means for bringing the presser roll into engagement with the stationary roll, a switch for controlling said pressure means, and a trip frame swung over the stationary roll and having a trip portion in the entrance to said rolls and adapted to be operated by the hand of the operator and adja- I presser moving means, connections between said switch and the trip frame whereby u on the operation of the trip frame the switch is open, and means for holding said trip frame in operative position with said switch closed.
6. In combination with a stationary roll, a presser roll, means for driving said rolls, electrical means for moving the presser roll into engagement with the stationary roll, and a safety appliance in the path of the hand of the operator and comprising a trip frame suitably mounted and having a trip portion in the entrance to said rolls and adapted to be operated by the hand of the operator and co-extensive with the stationary roll, a switch controlling the electrical LADBROOK H. FREEMAN.
