To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. FARGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and 'State of Delaware, have invented new and fect electrical contact therebetween at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a connector which may be applied conveniently and quickly to the ends of the wires or cables, and which comprises a mini-.
mum number of parts so as to be durable and inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.-.
Broadly, the invention consists in the fea tures of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed,- reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the preferred form of connector; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the gripping members; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4.4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the preferred form of connector comprises two terminal members 1 and 2 and an intermediate washer 3, the latter being made of rubber, fiber or metal, as may be desired. The. terminal members are shown as being substantially frusto-conical in shape and, hollow, their inner ends being respectively internally and externally threaded for the purpose of connecting them together, and enlarged to provide heads having polygonal outer surfaces 4 for the application of wrenches thereto.
The said terminal members afford outwardly tapering plug sockets 5 which. are in communication with openings 6 provided in the end walls thereof, the latter being intended for the insertion of the ends of the ective wires 7 to be connected. Plugs 8, which are shown in detail in Fig. 3, are adapted to be mounted within the socket of Specification of Letters Patent.

provide yielding gripping portions or jaws 10 for engagement with the wire passing between them.
In this device, the larger ends of the gripping plugs are adaptedto abut against each other, and consequently, when the companion members are adjusted, the meeting ends of the two plugs will engage each other fric tionally, as they are rotated by their respective terminal members, the plug sockets in the said last-named members and the plugs being correspondingly substantially elliptical in transverse section as shown particularly in Fig. 4. It is to be understood, however, that the said sockets and plugs may be constructed circular in cross section if that should prove to be more desirable.
A secure mechanical joint will be provided by this connector between two wires and, if the device is used for connecting electrical conductors, a joint of perfect electrical conductivity will also be provided, as indicatedby the absence of a rise in temperature of the respective parts due to the resistance characteristic of poor contacts. Also, from the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is apparent that a connector for the meeting ends of electrical conductors has been provided, wherein novel and valuable details of construction have been employed.
What is claimed is:
1. A connecting device, comprisin members having sockets therein, said soc ets being tapered and having their larger ends disposed adjacent to each other, a plurality of tapered plugs adapted to surround the adjacent portions of a plurality of wires and to coiiperate with the surfaces of the respective sockets of said members with their larger ends abutting each other, and means whereby said members may be adjusted relatively.
2. A connecting device comprisin a. body including companion members having alining sockets therein, the said sockets bemg tapered and having their larger endsudisposed adjacent to each other, a pair of tapered plugs adapted to be connected with the adjacent ends of a lurality of wires and to be mounted within and cotiperate with the walls of the respective sockets of the body members with their larger ends abutting each other, the said members being provided in their outer ends with openings receiving the said wires, the inner end of one body member being externally threaded, and aninternally threaded flange formed upon the inner end of the opposite-member for engagement with the threaded portion of the first member.
3. A connecting device comprising a body including companion members having alining sockets therein, the said sockets being tapered and having their larger ends disposed adjacent to each other, a pair of tapered plugs adapted to be connected with the adjacent ends of a plurality of wires and to be mounted within the respective sockets of the body members with their larger ends abutting each other, the said members being provided in their outer ends with openings receiving the said wires, the inner end of one body member being externally threaded, an internally threaded flange formed upon the inner end of the opposite member for engagement with the threaded portion of the 'rst member, and means for securing each plug against rotation within the re ceiving socket.
4. A connecting device comprising a body including companion members having alining sockets therein, the said sockets being tapered and having their larger ends disposed ad acent to each other, -a pair of tapered plugs adapted to be connected with the adjacent ends of a plurality of wires and to be mounted within the respective sockets of the body members with their larger ends abutting each other, the said members being provided in theirouter ends with openings receiving the said wires, the inner end of one body member being externally threaded, and an internally threaded flange formed 11 on the inner end of the opposite member or engagement with the threaded portion of the first member, each 'plug and the receiving socket being elliptical in transnumber of bodies and to be mounted within and coiiperating with the surfaces of the respective. sockets of said members with their larger ends abutting each other, and
means by which said members may be adjusted relatively.
6. A connecting device, comprising members having tapered sockets therein, a plurality of tapered plugs respectively adapted to surround the adjacent portions of a like number of bodies and to be mounted within and coiiperating with the walls of the respective sockets of said members with their larger ends abutting each other, and said members being respectively externally and internally threaded to adjustably secure the same together.
7. A connecting device, comprising members having tapered sockets therein, a like number of tapered plugs respectively adapted to surround the adjacent portions of a plurality of bodies and to be mounted within the respective sockets of said members with their larger ends abutting-each other, and means to prevent the circumferential movement of said plugs within said sockets.-
8. A connecting device, comprising members having tapered sockets therein, a like number of tapered plugs respectively adapted to surround the adjacent portions of a plurality of bodies and to be mounted within the respective-sockets of said members with their larger ends abutting each other, and means to control or guide the.
